The Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series was born with the success of the paperback of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Realizing they had a smash hit on their hands, the Ballantines sought other fantasies, publishing classics E.R. Eddison's The Worm Ouroboros and Mervyn Peake's Titus series. But it was with the addition of Lin Carter as editor that the series took off. In the span of five years, Ballantine published 67 more titles "under the Unicorn's head" (so named because of the small Unicorn collophon on all the books in the series). Besides classics, Carter introduced some new voices, including Joy Chant and Katherine Kurtz.
The Newcastle Forgotten Fantasy Series was edited by Douglas Menville and Robert Reginald (aka Michael Burgess), and can be thought of as a coda to the BAF, containing a few early works of fantasy that didn't make Lin Carter's cut.
In the sixties and seventies, these books were in danger of being forgotten, but thanks to Ballantine and Newcastle, they were dusted off and a whole generation rediscovered them. Now these same books are once again in danger, and it is my hope that this site might stimulate new readers to discover them.
Rather than try to reinvent the wheel, where there is a site featuring an author, I have simply linked there. In time, I will work to fill in those authors who have not yet received web treatment.
