Labor Day Regatta

August 30th-31st, 2008

Nine MC Scows competed in the 2008 version of the CBYC Labor Day Regatta. Three boats, Bill McGown, Vanderyacht, and Steve and Liam Hood drove down from Lake Watcom, WA to represent Fleet #84. Once again, Liam Hood accompanied his father to crew. Six boats from Fleet #57 sailed; including the newest member of Fleet #57, Michael Grimm from Minden, NV.

The opening races on Saturday were in strong and gusting winds. Three races had been planned, but only two were sailed due to the heavy winds, and the number of capsized or damaged boats. Over 75% of the boats in the Geary-18 start were unable to continue by the end of the second race. The MC Scow start did not fair much better. Of the nine boats sailing, only three managed to finish the first two races without major incident. Several MC Scows had turned over on their sides, and several others had turtled. Two MC Scows had to be towed in after the second race to be re-floated. The third race of the day was postponed until the following day in hopes of better sailing conditions.

The winds and the weather on the second day, Sunday, were much more moderate with some gusting. After several lead changes in the MC Scow start over four races, there was a three-way tie (McGown, Moore, and Lau) for the lead that would have to be decided in the fifth and final race. At the start for the fifth and deciding race, Jim Moore was over early and did not realize it until it turned out to be too late. Jim was not able to make it back up to the final group of MC Scows at the front. Bill McGown, Jerry Hogue, and Randy Lau made up the last group of MC Scows to the last mark.

Bill McGown rounded the last mark first with Jerry Hogue and Randy Lau following close behind. However, Bill McGown incorrectly rounded the last mark and had to go back to re-round. During the re-rounding, first Jerry Hogue, and then Randy Lau rounded the final mark ahead of Bill McGown. Jerry Hogue then fought to hold on to, while Randy Lau fought to attain the lead with Jerry Hogue winning the battle and finishing first in the final race. Bill McGown did an excellent job of coming up on Randy Lau's stern, but could not get an overlap before the finish line. Randy Lau finished second, and right behind was Bill McGown.

The final results had Randy & Donna Lau finishing first overall, Bill McGown second, and Jim and Claudia Moore third.
