#3143 1/6 Daguerreotype, rare signed on plate
Rare signed on plate sixth plate (2.75" by 3.25") daguerreotype
of a distinguished balding gentleman. Identified New York City daguerreotypist James Brown as seen by the plate which has
been engraved with “James Brown’s Gallery N. Y.” Housed in a case with a professional leather spine repair.
“Craig’s Daguerreian Registry” has extensive information on the daguerreotypist James Brown. The front and
back of the case have different designs but I believe are original.
CONDITION: the re-silvered plate is in good condition. Horizontal buffing lines seen at some angles. Scattered mold spidering
across the bottom. Resealed with a new glass and Filmoplast P90. (NOTE: re-silvered refers to a process done by the daguerreotypist
to add an extra layer of silver to the plate before buffing and the image exposed. This is generally believed to have been
done to achieve a superior plate surface, hence a better quality daguerreotype.)
