Introduced to the US market in the early summer of 1993 as a '93 1/2 model, the Aero was available through the 1997 model year.*    A total of 3,850 Aeros were sold in the US during this 4 1/2 year period (the Aero was also available in other markets).   Many of the Aero's key features were previewed in '92 with the Saab Ecosport prototype.

Saab introduced the Aero to the Saab owner community with a  Saab Soundings (vol 31, number 1) cover story  which included the claim that the Aero will "streak from 50 to 75 mph faster than a Ferrari Testarossa or a Porsche Carrera 4."   Speed comparisons aside, it's a car that's fun to drive, hauls a lot of people and their stuff, and like all Saab 9000's, the Aero has an enviable safety record.   In fact, in terms of safety,   the 9000 is  testimonial to Saab's Real-Life Safety program.   Folksam,   Sweden's largest auto insurer, selected the 9000 for  "The Safest Car in Sweden" award every year between 1989 and 1994.  In 1995 the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety declared the 9000 to be the safest in-production car because it had the lowest fatality rates of any vehicle.   These awards and others are listed on the Saab 9000 awards page.

I've put some of Saab Cars USA Aero press releases on this site.   Press release #1 and press release #2 are both from 1993.   A 1996 press release features the heading "Saab 9000 Aero is (the) Ultimate Sport Utility Vehicle".

  * For the 1998 model year, an Aero-like CSET was imported to the US.  In 1997, the 50th Anniversary Edition 9000 also had some similarities to the Aero.   Check out these 2 unique Saab 9000 models!
