The Beech Hollow Energy Project:

The Proposed Power Plant:

The Beech Hollow Energy Project is a privately-owned and operated power plant to be constructed on 350 acres in Robinson Township, Pennsylvania. This facility will produce energy by burning waste coal.

A Danger to Our Community:

Forest Service and National Park Service state that Greene Energy and Beech Hollow waste coal power plants will cause damage to national parks and forests 60 to 100 miles away.

When waste coal is burned, a number of environmental toxins are released into the air and the groundwater. Chief among these is mercury, a toxin widely implicated in the development of autism among children.

The permit for the Beech Hollow Energy Project was approved before the current EPA regulations were in place. Even though construction has not yet begun, the power plant will be allowed to produce pollution in concentrations currently deemed illegal.

Prevailing winds will carry pollution throughout much of Allegheny and Washington Counties. The most direct harm from the fly ash and air emissions will come to the residents of North Fayette and Robinson Township, in particular the school districts of Fort Cherry and West Allegheny.

A Necessary Evil?:

The supporters of this power plant continue to claim that they will be helping the environment by using "renewable energy" (GOB piles and waste coal). However, the toxins that will be produced as by-products of this processing will pose a real threat to the health of the land and the people and wildlife who inhabit it.
