Thirteen Years of FYBO

By Randy Foltz, K7TQ

FYBO (Freeze Your B--- Off) is a winter contest dreamed up by the Arizona ScQRPions, a QRP club. They thought it would be neat to have a contest where the temperature you operate in determined the multipliers. The mults start at 65 F and above for a mult of 1 and as the temperature goes down by 10 degrees, the mult goes up by 1 until you reach a temp of 20 F and below where the mult maxes out at 7.

Since FYBO began in 1997, eight of the thirteen years I've been able to go out in the field somewhere near Moscow, Idaho, and operate. Here are reports from all thirteen of the events. Generally, they are taken from what I reported at the time.

1997 - from near Elk City, ID

1998 - I stayed home to get DE for WAS in the DE QSO Party. Got 3 of 'em and got QSL cards, too!

1999 - Another year of staying home but this time with the window open.

2000 - Snowshoes near Deary, ID

2001 - Snowshoes near Elk River, ID

2002 - Multi-op with KC7QCS near Elk River, ID

2003 - Wind and rain kept me home, but with the window open.

2004 - Elk River, ID, again

2005 - No snow so near Deary, ID

2006 - A multi-op with KC7QCS in the Snake River, WA

2007 - An outdoor-indoor multi-op with KC7QCS from Moscow, ID

2008 - An indoor effort from home

2009 - Under the back deck at home
