“Beyond Words:
The Language of Music"
Worcester Hills Annual Workshop,"Beyond Words: The Language of
Music" will explore the vocabulary of music through articulation, phrasing,
ornamentation, tone and musical styles. The workshop will be held on
Saturday, March 8th, 2008, at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester,
MA.  The workshop will consist of four classes with each of the
distinguished guest faculty, a big band session, followed by a short
faculty recital.

Worcester Hills is delighted to welcome Letitia (Tish) Berlin, Frances
Blaker, John Tyson and Héloïse  Degrugillier for its 2008 Workshop,
with Justin Godoy coaching the Big Band session.

Meet the Workshop Coaches.....
LETITIA BERLIN teaches recorder and coaches ensembles
in California and at workshops around the country,
including the Amherst Early Music Festival, and the Port
Townsend early music workshop. She is the director of the
Hidden Valley Recorder Elderhostel (Carmel Valley, CA)
and co-director of the San Francisco Early Music Society's
Music Discovery Workshop for young children. Ms. Berlin
performs regularly with the Farallon Recorder Quartet and
the recorder duo Tibia. She has performed with the Carmel
Bach Festival and the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra as well as
other ensembles. Recordings include Motets, Lieder, and
Instrumental Works of Ludwig Senfl with the Farallon
Recorder Quartet, Ladino love songs with Yatan Atan on
the New Albion label and the second edition of the Disc
Continuo play-along CD on the Katastrophe label. Ms.
Berlin received a master's degree in early music performance
practices from Case Western Reserve University and a
Bachelor of music from the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro.
JOHN TYSON is a winner of the Bodky International
Competition, the Noah Greenberg Award, and a former
student of Frans Bruggen. He has appeared as soloist in
Italy, France, Germany, Spain, England, Scotland, Chile,
Canada, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia and throughout the
United States, as well as with major ensembles in Europe
and the US. Tyson has recorded for Erato, Harmonia
Mundi, Sine Qua Non, Titanic, and Ventadorn Records, and
with Boston's Handel & Haydn Society under Christopher
Hogwood. His solo CD, "Something Old, Something New"
features Baroque and contemporary music for recorder and
strings. A recognized expert in Renaissance music and
improvisation, Tyson is director of Renaissonics and is
music director for the Historical Dance Foundation of New
York. He has been on the faculty of the New England
Conservatory of Music since 1978, the Corso Internazionale
di Musica Antica in Urbino, Italy since 1990, and in 2001
became acting chairman of the department of historical
performance at Boston University.
FRANCES BLAKER received her Music Pedagogical and
Performance degrees from the Royal Conservatory of
Music in Copenhagen where she studied with Eva Legêne.
She also studied with Marion Verbruggen in the
Netherlands. In addition to regular appearances with Tibia,
the Farallon Recorder Quartet, and Ensemble Vermillian,
Ms. Blaker has performed as a soloist and with various
ensembles in the United States, Denmark, England and the
Netherlands. She teaches privately and at workshops
throughout the United States, including the San Francisco
Early Music Society Baroque workshop, Port Townsend
and Amherst Early Music; she was co-director of the
SFEMS Medieval and Renaissance workshop from
1996-2001 and is a co-director of Amherst Early Music.
Ms. Blaker is the author of the acclaimed The Recorder
Player's Companion and a collaborator and performer on the
Disc Continuo series of recordings.
HÉLOÏSE DEGRUGILLIER has worked extensively as
both a recorder performer and teacher throughout Europe
and the United States. Recent performances included a
recital at the National Music Museum in South Dakota and
performances and recording with the Boston Early Music
Festival Opera production of Lully’s Psyche. Héloïse
enjoys an active teaching career, working with the Boston
Recorder Society, Early Music of Metro West, and in her
private studio. She is currently studying Alexander
technique in Newton, Massachusetts and holds a Masters in
Music from the Utrecht Conservatory in the Netherlands.
She has studied with Heiko ter Scheggett, Saskia Coolen,
and Pedro Memelsdorff.
