our holiday farmhouse and the local area

Our house

  • The house is an old stone farm house which has been modernized throughout -- all of the amenities of a modern home, in traditional Irish country style

    • Original pine floors, open fireplace (peat provided),  pine woodwork, cozy bedrooms 

    • T.V. and VCR, clothes washer and dryer, microwave, refrigerator, radio/CD player 

  • Three bedrooms--two with a double bed and one with a set of single beds (additional bedroom with single bed is available upon request for nominal fee); cot for infants

  • Living room with open fireplace

  • Separate sitting room with fine views of the countryside

  • Kitchen and adjacent dining room

  • Spacious bathroom with shower and tub

  • Oil-fired central heating throughout the house

  • Large walled-in front yard ideal for children

  • Located in quiet rural area but easily accessible to large town (Cahersiveen--15 minutes) and Ring of Kerry

  • Fine views of mountains and ocean -- Kerry's highest cliffs are just up the road on the way to St. Finan's Bay and Ballinskelligs

Food/dining and entertainment

  • Food shops and pubs in picturesque fishing village of Portmagee, 1.5 km (10 minute walk down quiet country lane or along the beach)

  • Bakery/cafe in the village, with indoor and outdoor seating areas overlooking the harbor

  • Fine restaurants in Portmagee as well as Cahersiveen, Knightstown and Waterville

  • Traditional irish music in pubs in Portmagee, as well as set dancing

Recreation

  • Beaches
    • Reencaheragh - long, secluded beach along harbor, just a short walk from the cottage
    • Inny Strand - 8km: Over 2km of sand - very safe swimming beach
    • Glanleam, Valentia - 9km: Small beach in nice location
    • Ballinskelligs - 11km: Blue flag approved beach
    • St Finans Bay - 10km: Small sandy beach in spectacular location (not recommended for swimming)
    • Cooncrome - 12km: Nice secluded beach safe for swimming
    • White Strand - 15km: Blue flag beach
    • Kells Bay - 20km: Nice beach
    • Derrynane - 30km: large, spectacular beach; adjacent to Derrynane House and gardens, and near Staigue Ringfort

    • Several other golf courses elsewhere in Kerry,  Killarney (60 minutes), Sneem (60 minutes) and Kenmare (90 minutes).

    • Courses in Tralee are about 90 minutes away along scenic portion of Ring of Kerry route. Ballybunnion (2 hours) and Old Head (Kinsale--2 hrs) are also accessible.

  • Angling

    Sea Angling: 
    • Blue shark, gurnard, tope,wrasse, pollack, mackerel, plaice, spurdogs, bass, flats, ray, conger, dog fish, bass, whiting, mullet, codling and coal fish.
    • Fully equipped and approved boats are available at: Valentia, Cahirciveen, Derrynane.

    Shore angling:
     
    • Kells: rock fishing for pollack, wrasse and dog fish
    • Coonanna Harbour: Fishing off pier - flat fish, conger
    • Cooncrome Harbour: Rock fishing on western side - pollack, wrasse and mackerel
    • Lough Kay: flatfish, occasional ray
    • Valentia Island: Ray, conger, mullet, pollack, mackerel
    • Renard Point: Off pier - Flatfish, mackerel, Bass at outflow from Fish Plant (bottom and float fishing)
    • Portmagee - Dogfish, small pollack off bridge. Conger and mullet in harbour
    • St. Finians Bay: Bas, flatfish (surf fishing). Pollack, mackerel, wrasse (rock fishing)
    • Ballinskelligs Bay/Waterville: Bass, flat fish (surf fishing)
    • Hogs Head: Pollack, mackerel, wrasse(rock fishing)
    • Derrynane: Bass, flatfish(surf fishing)
    • Lambs Head: Pollack, mackerel, wrasse, conger, dog fish (spinning and bottom fishing)


         Game angling:

  • River Inny : Salmon (July/August), Sea trout (April onwards), brown trout
  • Lough Currane - Ghillies for hire on lake shore. Salmon ( Febuary - September); sea trout, brown trout
  • Lough Coppal - Some grilse, sea trout
  • Cummeragh River - Salmon (March - September),; sea trout
  • Lakes Cloonaghlin and Derriana - Sea trout, Salmon (summer)
  • Horse riding and pony trekking 

    • several locations within a few minutes' drive, brochures available in the cottage 

     

            

  • Bird Watching:
    • Portmagee area: Herring Gull, Shag, Arctic Skua, Heron, Ducks (Mallard, Teal and Wigeon), Wild Geese, Redshank, Swallow, Starling, Magpie, Crow, Rook etc.
    • Little Skellig (May - August) - Puffin, Gannet, Fulmar, Storm Petrel, Kittiwake, Oyster catcher, Razorbill, Gull

     

  • Other Recreation and tourism activities

    • Scuba-diving is a popular recreation activity in the area due to the clear waters and moderate Gulf Stream currents

    • Unique Glanleam tropical gardens on Valentia Island across Portmagee harbor; several other garden attractions within 1 hour's drive.

    • National parks/forests at Derrynane and Killarney

Culture and history

  • Renowned Skellig Michael, a 9th century monastic island settlement several miles off-shore and accessible by boat hired from Portmagee (leaving daily, weather permitting), inhabited by thousands of puffins in season. This is one of the most interesting tourism destinations in southwest Ireland.

  • Just over the hill in The Glen is one of the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) areas found mainly on the west coast of Ireland

  • If you are interested in Irish archeology and history, the area is full of a variety of noted sites, up to four thousand years' old, such as wedge tombs, stone rows, standing stones, stone ring forts, promontory forts and ogham stones. See the Local Activities page for more details.

The Ring of Kerry

  • The cottage is just minutes from the world-famous Ring of Kerry, which has numerous other attractions and beautiful scenic drives
