Culture and history
Renowned Skellig Michael, a 9th century monastic island
settlement several miles off-shore and accessible by boat hired from
Portmagee (leaving daily, weather permitting),
inhabited by thousands of puffins in season. This is one of the most
interesting tourism destinations in southwest Ireland.
Just over the hill in The Glen is one
of the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) areas found mainly on the west coast
of Ireland
If you are interested in Irish
archeology and history, the area is full of a variety of noted sites, up
to four thousand years' old, such as wedge tombs, stone rows, standing
stones, stone ring forts, promontory forts and ogham stones. See the Local Activities page for more
details.
