1898 Club founded in December as The Friday Afternoon Club. Seven charter members met in the homes every Friday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Motive set forth in the by-laws was to "promote the social, moral and intellectual interests of the community and to establish a public library."

1900 Federated and became affiliated with California Federation of Women’s Clubs.

1901 Library started in the McKellar home.

1901 Meeting day changed to Saturday - became the Saturday Afternoon Club of Downey.

1901 Lot purchased at Firestone Blvd. and New Street.

1910 Clubhouse built at cost of $1752.

1912 Meeting day changed to Wednesday to meet twice monthly.

1915 L.A. Board of Supervisors paid $10 monthly to help establish L.A. County Free Library, located in the Woman’s Club.

1924 Name changed to Woman’s Club of Downey.

1926 Library had outgrown its quarters and moved to

building on Downey Avenue. Club donated its collection.

1928 Addition built to clubhouse to establish better-baby clinic attended by L.A. County doctors and nurses.

1939 Lot purchased on Church Street for a new clubhouse. Later sold.

1945 Junior Women’s Club formed in January.

1946 Seniors and Juniors purchased resuscitator for the city. Juniors dedicated a room in Downey Hospital.

1947 Clubhouse sold for $28,000. December 3, 1947, last meeting. Future meetings held at the Presbyterian Church.

1949 Lot purchased at Paramount and Lubec for $11,000.

1950 New Clubhouse completed in September at cost of $55,000.

1960 Membership reached 500 and prospective members placed on a waiting list.
