Riding LessonsThe casting director wants to know if you're good with horses," my agent asked, cupping his palm over the telephone mouthpiece. At first I was tempted to tell the truth and say no, but what actor in his right mind would do a dumb thing like that?
"Tell him not to worry," I said. "Tell him I was born in the saddle, wearing a cowboy hat."
The agent didn't believe me, but that didn't matter because just like me, his need to make a buck was a lot stronger than his principles. He must have sold them a convincing bill of goods, as I was hired to play in the 1950's TV show, The Marshal of Gunsight Pass.
I imagined this might be the beginning of the end of me. I was a city boy and the only horse I was ever close enough to touch was an old mare who pulled my local Borden Company milk delivery wagon in those early days in New York City. Yes, I did lie to get the job and knew if my old mother was right, God would punish me for it. Down deep, though, I was sure her code of morals didn't include actors. We were exempt.
