The
year of 1925 was Indio Depot's heyday with 16 passenger trains daily. This was
at a time one could go to Los Angeles in several hours on the train, yet it could take all day for a trip from Indio to nearby
Mecca by road. In the summer months, ice was brought down from Truckee Ca. to
cool the passenger cars and for use at the depot.
Location:
Destroyed by fire, nothing exists of the Indio Station today. It is listed in
the April 5th 1987 Western Region Timetable at milepost 610.9, in railroad terms. The depot site is viewable looking east
from the Jackson Street overpass. To get on a passenger train these days from Indio, one has to take the Amtrack bus service
to San Bernardino from Winchell's Donuts on Monroe Avenue.
