( a star port for the general public . . . )

Griffith holds a public star party every month on the closest Saturday when the first quarter Moon is in the sky.  The Los Angeles Astronomical Society (LAAS) and Sidewalk Astronomers aid the Griffith staff with their personal telescopes to give the public a view of the Moon, any planets, and whatever else may be up in the sky that can be easily seen.

These images are from the one held on Saturday April 16th 2005.

They were taken with my 127 mm aperture f/12.1 Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope, a Creative Pro eX web camera, and except for the Cassini image, a 2x magnifier (Barlow).  Each consists of hundreds of individual images selected, stacked, and processed to bring out as many details as possible.  The weather aided us that night by being reasonably steady.

All lunar images are oriented north at the top, east to the right.

This black and white image of Saturn is the best non-colored one I've taken, and the best one I've taken through my 127 mm Mak.  Compare the detail seen here with this color one taken through a C-14, a 14 inch (355 mm) aperture telescope.
