PHONE PATCH

Many repeaters have what we call a Phone Patch. This is a connection to the phone lines so that users of the repeater can when necessary make a phone call. Each repeater has a specific method to activate the phone patch. You will need to contact a club member to get the method, but generally it will include the use of the # and * keys. This is one of the expenses to the radio club that maintains the repeater so if you use the phone patch please join the club and pay your dues. Some phones patches are open (available to all) and some are closed (available to only club members). Often the phone patch is called the auto Patch (Before mobile phones, this was its the most often use, in the automobile).

Keep in mind that if you use the auto patch you are talking to the total community, hams and non hams, and specific information like addresses, time you are getting home, who is at home and where the house key is kept should be kept to a minimum for you and your families safety.

Please let the other person know you are on the radio so they will not use inappropriate language. The whole world is listening.

When you are put on hold, identify at regular intervals so that the control operator won't cut you off. You can override the music with your call sign, and you should as often as it seems appropriate.

When calling 911 let the operator know you are an amateur radio operator and give your call sign and that you are on an amateur radio auto-patch.

If your radio has the capability, put the phone number in memory and use it. It avoids wrong numbers with little keys.

Using the phone patch is somewhat like using simplex. There is no courtesy tone, and you must release the PTT to hear. Not the easiest thing to get used to the first time.

The only way to learn how to use the phone patch is to use it. I recommend that you use it to make a phone call so you are familiar with the process before you really need to use it in an emergency.

When you finish with the patch always clear (bring down, release the patch what ever you want to call it) and then identify with your call sign.

The phone patch may be shut down for no apparent reason on occasion. The reason is usually an inappropriate use of the patch. Non hams have been using it, bad language during the conversation, fake calls to 911 or business calls.

A few things to keep in mind when using the phone patch.
Don't check on kids, the world is listening.
Don't tell where the house key is kept.

A very important reminder--Ask for help when you are having trouble.
All of us should know how the make the phone patches works. Get a member to either give you the codes or bring up the patch for you.
An auto patch call can be a life saver, learn how to use it before you need it.
