"Bird-horizoning is such exhilarating sport that no one who has really tasted the flavor of it can ever quite forget "

Santa Barbara County Lister's

Do you maintain a Santa Barbara County Life List? Here you can participate in a (mostly) non-competitive game of sharing your county list totals with others. If you have at least 300 species on your county list you can add your name to the page. Simply send your current count along with comments, memorable milestones, your biggest hits and misses, and you will be added to the Lister's page. A total of 400 is a milestone worthy of special recognition and places participants in the exclusive "400 CLUB" - a pinnacle of birding accomplishments. Contact the WEBMASTER to participate.

Big Day & Big Year Listing

In William Dawson's quote above (The Condor, 1913 - "Santa Barbara All-Day Test"), he alludes to his sense of exhilaration in attempting an early Santa Barbara County "Big Day" contest of sorts, or as he referred to it in his day, "Bird-horizoning". Local birders have since continued to chase birds in the hopes of reaching a new high count for the day or at the end of a birding "Big Year". Records were meant to be broken, and every birder involved in such a challenge knows the rewards and disappointments in trying to break previous records. These contest pages are dedicated to all the Santa Barbara County Big Day and Big Year participants and to those who attempt to break their records.
