There are 5 distinct eco-systems as one climbs up the mountain.  The first is the rain forest.  It's lush and green and gorgeous.   The flora, combined with the fact that ample oxygen is still going to our brains,  reinforces the idea that climbing a big mountain is a good idea.

A portion of our 33 porters.  They carried between 50 and 70 pounds making our 20 pound day packs look pretty wimpy.  They broke camp every morning after we started hiking, packed up, passed us at some point, and had the next camp set up when we arrived.
