Undara is in the middle of nowhere in the Atherton tablelands. The "resort" consists of some train cars converted
to sleeping quarters, RV and camping area, permanent tents. We were in a permanent tent. It was cold. Imagine the desert at night.
Additional train cars have been arranged around the perimeter of the dining area, one of them a bar, which was a good
sign because after miles of dodging roadkill and road trains (trucks), we were in need of a drink. Surprise
#4: The bar at Undara did not open at traditional "happy hour" time. So we bought beer and pre-mixed
vodka drinks from the gift shop and drank them. Several of them. In the cold.
We went on a sunset tour of the area ostensibly to view critters who are becoming more active as dusk descends.
Tim, our very enthusiastic guide, drove us to what passes for a "high point" in the tablelands and presented the group of
us with a picnic basket of cheese and fruit and a bottle of champagne. The idea was to watch the suset as civilized
people do, with brie and bubbles. Surprise #5: Colonial customs are alive and well.
(While charming, a thermos of hot cocoa would have been more appropriate.)
