Introduction

The year is 1900, and the twentieth century is just around the corner. In this era of industry and the fever of progress, Britannia may rule the waves, but Cleopatra rules the air over the Mediterranean.

The A.S. Cleopatra will be taking her maiden voyage during the summer of 1900 - departing from Rome and flying to Cairo in one fourth the time of the fastest luxury liners. The launch of the Cleopatra , the cutting edge of commercial transportation, has drawn the wealthy, the fashionable and the eccentric of the Old and New Worlds alike. The voyage will make the headlines in all of the major newspapers of the civilized world, and its passengers will set the tone for fashionable travel in the twentieth century. Be among the first to experience travel through the clouds...

A.S. Cleopatra is a game with turn-of-the-century flair to be held on Saturday, December 6th, 2003 beginning at 6:00 pm at the home of Phil and Judy Adler in Glendale: 987 Kirkton Pl, Glendale.

The Voyage

Departing Rome in the early afternoon, passengers will float above the Italian countryside, watch the sun set over the Mediterranean and awaken to a sunrise off the coast of Egypt. The voyage will be celebrated with a reception on the first evening and will end with passengers posing for an historic photograph at the feet of the Sphinx.

In game terms, play will take place in two phases. Play will begin on the afternoon of departure from Rome (phase one), when passengers will arrive and become acquainted with the shipboard routine. A grand reception will be the highlight of the evening's activities before passengers head to their cabins for the night. On the day of arrival (phase two), passengers will be served breakfast on-board ship and will have the opportunity to take in the magnificent view from the airship's windows. Passengers will have plenty of time to socialize and take in the shipboard activities as they move toward their final destination. Play will end with the arrival of the airship in Cairo. For a more on the voyage, read the brochure Beckett Airship Lines printed in anticipation of Cleopatra's regular winter service.

The Passengers

The A.S. Cleopatra has attracted the adventurous and the elite from around the world. The cost of passage is steep, and those who cannot afford their own fare must find other ways of assuring their spot on this historic voyage.

Characters should be in the style of turn-of-the-century history or literature. Personalities such as The Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, Sherlock Holmes, Kit Walker or Nellie Bly would not be out of place. Yet, not everyone on board is a celebrity. The major newspapers are bound to have representatives on board to record the journey. Aspiring engineers may find themselves going into debt to secure a spot on this technological marvel. And, of course, there are always those who find themselves aboard more by chance than by design...

Interested players have the option of creating their own character or having a character created for them by the writers. Players may create their own characters by completing the Character Questionnaire below. Players who would like to have characters written for them should complete the Character Preference Briefing to give us an idea of what kinds of characters you would enjoy playing. Character Questionnaires and Character Preference Briefings should be submitted by October 1, 2003. Send completed questionnaires to Karen Bowman: karen_bowman@yahoo.com.

The Airship

The A.S. Cleopatra was designed to be the epitome of luxury and is the jewel of Beckett Airships, Ltd. Long time rivals with Zeppelin in Germany, Beckett has won the race for commercial viability with the launching of the A.S. Cleopatra, leaving Zeppelin far behind in the development stages of a commercial airship.

Credit where it's due

The concept of a turn of the century game on an airship came from Intrigue in the Clouds, an excellent LARP by Dean Edgell. If you ever get a chance to play it, you should!
