Welcome to San Inguon, a quiet little town in the Arizona desert. San Inguon was founded in 1861 and named after the San Inguon River, a tributary of the Centennial Wash River. From its founding until the early 1950's, San Inguon was a small town (population around 500) whose main inhabitants were people with tuberculosis, people working in Sturvin Mining, Inc. (the major town industry), or some combination of the two.
In the early '50's, however, all of that changed. First came Fort Lucas Rita and then the adjoining Research Labs. Built in 1954, the Fort contributes little to the local economy, but the Research Labs have brought many scientists to town, causing a mini-boom in the local economy. This mini-boom was enhanced in 1956 with the construction of I-42, the major interstate which runs between Phoenix and San Diego. Truck stops suddenly sprung up outside of town, and the town remains a minor stopping point between the two major cities. San Inguon is about an hour from the nearest sizeable town, and this, combined with the uranium from the Sturvin Mine, has made the nearby desert perfect for the Army's above-ground nuclear tests.
Now it's 1959 and, all in all, San Inguon still retains much of its small-town charm (even today, the population is no higher than 5000), but without much of the small-town poverty. The scenery is still beautiful, with mesas in all directions, and the small-town look has only been slightly marred by the installation of air-raid sirens on several corners.
Today, Saturday, February 5, is IguanaFest! What started as a pep rally for the high school basketball team has turned into a major festival for the whole town. There will be a sock hop this evening, and the whole town is excited about the Science Fair being put on by the Research Labs. The day's festivities started with a parade and pep rally for the Iguanas. It's shaping up to be the greatest Iguana Fest ever!
There are several key places in San Inguon:
San Inguon High School, home of the Fighting Iguanas, is the pride and joy of the local community. Much like every high school, San Inguon High has its fair share of cliques and rivalries. Its halls are filled with all kinds of kids - tough guys, smart guys, good kids, not-so-good kids...
Pops' Malt Shop, across from a corner of the Town Square, is a favorite hang-out of San Inguon - teenagers and adults alike. Pops is a swell guy. Not only does he make a great burger and chocolate malt, he always seems to have a helpful word of advice when you most need one.
Town Square is the setting for many important town events. It bears stars and stripes for the Fourth of July, a decorated pine tree at Christmas and balloons and streamers of San Inguon High's Yellow and Green for Iguana Fest. Located in the middle of the original town's shopping district, the Square has a great view of the town's main streets, stores, movie theater and Town Hall.
"Lovers' Lane" is the name affectionately given to the area north of town where a small stretch of mesa overlooks the San Inguon river. There's a stunning view from this vantage, and everyone has fond memories of the first time they came here to hold hands with their sweetheart and watch the sun set over the desert...
Fort Lucas Rita, just a twenty minute drive from town, is a center of military weapons testing and high-tech research. The Fort contains not only a vast Testing Area for America's newest tools for the Defense of Democracy, it also houses the most advanced Research Labs in the state. Scientists from all over the country now make their home in San Inguon, and the Labs are home to many forms of Science. There is regular bus service between Town Square and the Fort.
Observatory, nearby Fort Lucas Rita. Though built as part of the Research Labs' facilities, the observatory is not in a restricted area and is open to the public every Saturday for Open Night. Stop by and take a look at the stars. [Back to Top]
San Inguon is home to many different folks from many walks of life. Like any small town, you have your regular, ordinary citizens and your more colorful, eccentric personalities. This is NOT the story of regular, ordinary citizens. This means that you shouldn't be constrained by 'traditional' 1950's stereotypes of who is appropriate for what sort of job. As you build your San Inguonian, here are some types of people you might consider:
Teenagers - The students of San Inguon HS come in many shapes and sizes and personalities. Some like to think of themselves as "gangs," and band together for good or for ill. Others are simply looking for someone to understand them for who they are. Ah, but teenagers will be teenagers! They're all good kids, though, deep down. Right?
Scientists - The Research Labs are a warren of smaller labs headed by Respected Scientists and manned by ever-eager Research Assistants. Some are Mad, others are simply eccentric, but all dabble in high-tech Weird Science.
Other Adults - Teenagers and Scientists are not the only inhabitants of San Inguon. Parents, shop keepers, business men, teachers, military men and women and town officials all form the colorful mosaic of this small town. Some say there aren’t any secrets in a small town. I guess they haven’t been to San Inguon...
Of course, your creativity will be the key to a good time, so feel free to make your own blend of these character types that would fit nicely into a 1959 Sci-Fi/Horror B-movie setting. Fill out the character questionnaire and send to us, and we'll work with you to build a great San Inguonian. We would like all questionnaires by December 1, 1999. After December 1, we will still take questionnaires, but it may be more difficult to integrate your character into plots.
Take a look at the character list for inspiration.
Here’s what we promise you will NOT find in this game...
