A new and innovative television series that explores and
showcases the cultural, historical, musical, artistic and comic aspects of
the Chicano Experience. This ongoing series has thirteen completed programs,
all written, produced, directed and edited by UCLA Film School graduate Daniel Jacobo with motion-graphics, animation and special
effects created by Daniel Jacobo and A. C. Costa. New Program
El NORTE AND GREGORY NAVA This a one of a kind interview with the Director of El Norte-1983 nominated for an Academy Award for best screenwriting, Selena, My Family and American Family. Gregory Nava discusses his early film career beginning as a film production student at UCLA in the early 1970s. Very interesting insights into the making of his first major film - El Norte. Program Premiere THE AZTLAN CHRONICLE This episode asks the question, What is AZTLAN? Writer/director Lu’s Valdez provides some interesting insights into why an understanding of pre-Columbian cultures plays an important role in today's society. Features rich imagery and an original precolumbian musical score.
Program #1 AMERICA, I REMEMBER YOU - Parts I & II Dr. Jesus "Chuy" Negrete performs a singing and musical account of the last 500 years of Chicano/Chicana History. Visuals such as archival photos, paintings, drawings and recreations were carefully and painstakingly researched for authenticity and are integrated throughout the video.
Program #2 NOVELIST DANIEL CANO & THE MEXICAN REVOLUTION English professor and Chicano author Daniel Cano is profiled in this video which reveals his trilogy novel "PEPE RIOS." Professor Cano discusses his family roots in Mexico and how he grew up in a racially mixed barrio in West Los Angeles.
Program #3 PAIN OF THE MACHO
CLICK BUTTON FOR REAL VIDEO SAMPLE A fresh new comedy about a Chicano trying to make it with
an Anglo woman. Latins Anonymous Rick Najera writes, directs and stars in
this satirical look at macho love and the possible problems a Chicano must
face when dating a young white female. Program #4 TRIBUTE TO CESAR CHAVEZ A song, El Corrido de Cˇsar Chavez, performed by El Teatro
Campesino is played over the images of the funeral procession of the late
United Farm Worker leader, Cˇsar Chavez. Also, Cˇsar's last speech at UC Program #5 AZTLAN, BABYLON, RHYTHM AND BLUES This performance art film/video reaches into the mind of a
present day Chicano, played by Rubˇn Guevara. Rubˇn plays out personal scenes
about living and working in East Los Angeles. Towards the end, Rubˇn reveals
his alter ego and Chicano Superhero, Funkkahuatl. Program #6 LUIS PEREZ ON PRE-COLUMBIAN MUSIC The Pacific Ocean is the backdrop as pre-Columbian
musician Lu’s Perez performs his special brand of modern Mesoamerican music
on the Santa Monica Pier. Special video effects accentuate his performance
along with visually stimulating costumes worn by choreographed dancers
depicting jaguars, ocelots, insects and other zoomorphic figures. Program #7 LAUGHING LATINS.COM The members of this comedy troupe break all stereotypes through their special brand of humor. This underground program reveals an outrageous and hilarious insight into the lives of some of the funniest Latinos and Latinas in Television History. Don't miss it! Program #8 FREDDY & FLACO A performance by this Grammy Award winning group includes
many of their hit tunes. Freddy and Flaco discuss their type of music and
what it means to play the TEX MEX sound. Program #9 DR. LOCO'S ROCKIN' JALAPENO BAND This program takes a look at the latest in "Chicano
Fusion" performed by the most educated and degree holding performers in
the U.S.A. These San Francisco based musicians stimulate the grey matter in
your heads by singing songs that are cultural, historical, political, social
and sprinkled with some doses of humor and satire. They don't forget to make
you dance as they educate you with Chicanotainment. Interviews with band
members are included throughout the video. Program #10 CHICANAS IN THE VISUAL ARTS AND LITERATURE Fine art, Poetry, Writing and Photography produced by
Chicanas is the focus of this show. The artists describe their struggles and
sources of inspiration that have affected their artwork and writings.
Featured artists includes Diane Gamboa, Laura Aguilar, Yolanda Gonzales,
Dolores Guerrero Cruz and writers Marisela Norte, Maria Helena Viramontes,
Terri de la Pe–a and Naomi Qui–ones. Samples of their artwork and readings
are included in this video. Program #11 FUTURE LEADERS A summer camp where high school students learn public
speaking and government procedures? These topics and other areas of social
importance that students are not normally exposed to are explored in this
video. Three Latinas from Santa Monica describe their experiences at this
unique summer camp held every year in the San Bernadino mountains. They
reveal some insights into their experiences and describe how their lives have
been positively changed and transformed. |
