No, science has not shown that the Bible is wrong! Scientists may wish to show that the Bible is wrong, but they have not succeeded. If fact, in recent years the discoveries and data of science tend in just the opposite direction. They affirm the Bible as correct! Let's examine some examples of this.

For many years astronomers believed that our universe had always existed, and existed just as it is right now. They thought that the universe had always been like it is now, and that it would always be like it is right now. This was called the steady state theory of cosmology. The view was that matter, energy, stars, galaxies, etc. were continuously coming into existence and continuously being destroyed. In this view there had never been a beginning to the universe, and there would never be an end.

Of course this is different than what the Bible tells us. The Bible says that there was a "time" when the universe did not exist, and that God himself brought the universe into existence from nothing. The Bible definitely states that there was a "beginning" to everything.

What does science know now? Today, science knows that the universe did indeed have a beginning. This beginning is called the "Big Bang." Einstein's General Theory of Relativity predicts that the universe all started from a single point at an instant called the Big Bang which was the beginning of time and space, matter and energy, all that we can see or perceive. Not only is there a theory, but scientists have actually heard the emission, the noise, from the Big Bang. They experimentally have verified that it took place. Today, the fact that the universe had a beginning is universally accepted among scientists. In fact a number of measurements have been made to determine when the Big Bang took place, or in other words, how old the universe is. The scientist's calculations say that the universe is between eight and thirteen billion years old.

It was quite popular in the last century to believe that the Bible was in error and merely ancient mythology because many of the sites, cities and people named in the Bible had never been verified as having existed by any other sources. In recent decades all of this has been changing.

For many, many decades archeologists doubted that the David of the Old Testament ever existed. David was the greatest king Israel ever had, and he ruled over Israel during her golden age. But scientists doubted his very existence because they had never found any evidence outside the Bible to confirm his reign or even his family. But just in the last few years a record has been found which is inscribed as with "House of David." (See "David found at Dan" in Biblical Archeological Review, March/April 1994) These finds have forced archeologists to re-examine their options on this matter.

In the last few years a burial box has been found in excavations near Jerusalem that is inscribed with the name Josephus Caiaphas. Caiaphas was the High Priest that arranged for the capture and trial of Jesus. Archeologists agree that the man named on the burial box is that same High Priest.

For many year scholars doubted that the Hebrew exodus from Egypt ever took place even though it is described in detail in the Bible. Recent evidence is turning this opinion around (See "Exodus Itinerary Confirmed by Egyptian Evidence" in Biblical Archeological Review, September/October 1994). Now we find that the scientific evidence for the exodus is beginning to pile up, again in favor of the Bible.

Evolution would have us believe that living organisms occurred accidentally and gradually upon the earth, but science is finding from looking at the fossil records that life occurred as an explosion. Millions of forms of life appeared all at once, and not as the product of continuous evolution. Not only did the universe itself begin in an instant with a Big Bang, but life sprang upon the planet in an incredibly short period of time. This experimental result is not what science had predicted or expected, but it is what the Bible has said, and what every believer expected.

By studying portions of the X-chromosome which is passed down from mother to daughter from women all over the world scientists have been able to determine that every woman alive today is descended from a single woman. All women alive today have a common ancestor many generations ago. In fact, by examining the changes that have occurred in the DNA they can estimate how many generations we must go back to reach this common female ancestor. Scientists elected to call this woman "Eve." An appropriate name since this is the name the Bible gives to the first woman. Previously science had believed that human beings evolved from various beginnings at various points on the planet. Imagine their surprise when they found out that their predictions were wrong, and that the Bible was right, again!

In a parallel development, geneticists have examined portions of the Y-chromosome which is passed from father to son. They have compared the DNA from men all over the world, and they have come to the same conclusion as their predecessors. They have concluded that every man alive today is the descendant of a single man. No matter what their nation, race, or color, all men are descended from a single man. Unfortunately, they have decided to call this man "Adam" after the first man of the Bible. But these scientists have run into a problem. You see, they too can estimate the number of generations we must count back to get to the common ancestor, and the number they get is less, a lot less, than the corresponding number for Eve. That's a problem for science because there is no way a bisexual specie can exist for generations with only females! That kind of puts another kink in the evolution theory since it's hard to evolve alone. Of course, this is not a problem to the Bible. The Bible tells us that every man alive today is indeed the descendant of a single man, but the Bible tells us that this man's name was Noah. And Noah lived generations after Eve.

Science has not proven the Bible to be wrong. As a matter of fact the trend in recent years has been in the other direction; science is confirming the Bible as true. Based on this data we may infer that any remaining apparent differences between the Bible and science are probably just due to our incomplete scientific knowledge and not to any possible error in the Bible.
