The Greek word, which is most often translated as "sin" in the New Testament, is "Harmartia." This word has its origins in archery where it simply means "to miss the mark." This is a very good picture of what the Bible means by sin. Sin is simply missing the mark, not doing what God would have you do. Sin is not living up to the perfect plan, which God has for your life. So the "sinners club" is not a very exclusive group. We all belong. You don't have to be an ax murderer, a serial killer, a child molester, a spouse abuser, or some other "low life" to be a sinner. You just have to fail to live up to God's perfect will for your life.
This is why the Scriptures can say:
There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
and
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way. Isaiah 53:6
Since we are all sinners, and no sinner can share eternal life with God, we are all in need of a Savior, someone to remove our sin and restore us to fellowship with Almighty God.
