Leadership Insights Newsletter - Issue #2 |

Personal
Thoughts From Larry Welcome to the
second edition of Leadership Insights. The purpose of this periodic newsletter is to provide clients, leaders, and friends
with insights and ideas that will help you continue to take your leadership and business skills to the next level. I
received a very positive response to the idea of periodically choosing a leader in our community and interviewing them about
their leadership style. As a result, I will adopt that as a feature in a future issue. If you haven't already, please send
names of leaders you would like to see included. Your feedback will continue to help shape the future content
of this newsletter. Please contact me with any questions, comments, and suggestions. I would also appreciate it if you would
forward this to people you know who may gain from it. Thanks for reading my newsletter and I'll see you with our
next issue soon. Larry

| LEADERSHIP
IS ... |
For the next nine months we will continue to look at 10 Traits of a Great Leader. All of the 10 traits fall directly
in line with the 3 essential personal competencies for effective leadership. They are:
- To know yourself
- To develop a clear vision and be able to communicate it to others
- To connect with and positively influence others
Last month we focused on Trait
#1 which is: "Great leaders know who they really are, what they really want in their professional and personal life, and why
they want it. They recognize the importance of having a clear set of personal and business values to measure their choices
against, they know their strengths and weaknesses, and how to use them both in positive ways."
Leadership Trait #2
"Great Leaders accept responsibility for the choices they make
in life and in business. They have the courage to ask the tough questions, make difficult decisions, take the necessary risks,
and to act on making needed changes. This results in them maintaining a pro-active versus a re-active attitude."
Courage
is always one of the first traits that comes to my mind when I think of a great leader. It takes great courage to stand up
for what you really believe in, and to make difficult decisions when the time is right.
Being pro-active, rather than
living life in a re-active state, is one of the top 3 challenges that the leaders I work with face. We are all so bombarded
by outside input and inside issues that we sometimes feel like we can't find the time to set aside, to pro-actively plan for
the future. In today's quickly changing world, planning for the future is absolutely essential to stay competitive.
Try
setting aside at least ½ day, twice each month, to just concentrate on "working on your business" instead of "in your business."
Find a place other than your work, and for one of those days invite a couple of trusted peers and advisors to mastermind with
you. During that time, ask what is working and what isn't working. Look out into the future needs of your customers
and organization. This works even better when you have an outside facilitator to guide the meeting and capture the important
ideas. It will allow you to truly just be a participant in the brainstorming. |

| "DREAM TEAM" CULTURE BUILDING |
|
Since
the last newsletter, have you had the opportunity to sit and dream about what the "perfect team" for your organization would
look like? You know, YOUR dream team and how they will act, communicate, and perform.
Last month we looked at the
first step for developing your "Dream Team." That step is to develop clarity about your organization's Mission, Values, and
Vision.
This month we are looking at Step #2:
Determine what you want your
organizational culture to look like.
When considering this question you should be asking yourself questions
like:
- What attitudes do we want our people to have and how do want them to act?
- How do we want our people to make decisions?
- Should accountability be a cornerstone of our culture?
- How can we build in an attitude that supports creative problem solving?
- Is community service important in our culture, and if it is, how do we support that?
- What would it be like for us to have a culture of looking for what's right instead of what's wrong?
There are
many more questions to consider. The key is to actually take the time to decide what you really want it to look like. You
need to know where you want to go before setting off on the road to a "Dream Team" culture. Next month we will look at the
next step that is critical for your journey.

This last month I had the opportunity to work with the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce for their staff retreat.
We had some great discussions talking about the "10 Rules for Great Communications" and how to appreciate the strengths of
each of the generations found in today's workplace.
