LEADERSHIP IS ...

For the next seven months we will continue to look at 10 Traits of a Great Leader. All of the 10 traits fall directly in line with the 3 essential personal competencies for effective leadership. They are:

1.    To know yourself
2.    To develop a clear vision and be able to communicate it to others
3.    To connect with and influence others

Last month we focused on Trait #2 which is: "Great Leaders accept responsibility for the choices they make in life and in business. They have the courage to ask the tough questions, make difficult decisions, take the necessary risks, and to act on making needed changes. This results in them maintaining a pro-active versus a re-active attitude."

Leadership Trait #3

"Great Leaders walk their talk and do as they say they'll do. They live their life with integrity and inspire  trust. They lead their organizations with ethics and by always trying to do "the right thing"."

This seems like the easy one, right? How often do we see leaders who talk about doing things one way, yet they don't model that in real life. When you see this, do you feel let down? I do and it affects my respect and belief in them when it happens.

There is an old poem about raising children that talks about how they only really "hear" what they see us do, not what they hear us say. Wouldn't it be great if we all decided to adapt an attitude of walking our talk, in every part of our life! This action alone can develop trust, inspire other people, and lead us to doing the "right thing."

"DREAM TEAM" CULTURE BUILDING

Last month we looked at Step #2 for developing your "Dream Team" That step was:

"Determine what you want your organization's culture to look like."

This month we are looking at Step #3:

"Assess your current employee culture."

I find this to be one of the most interesting steps. It is about finding out what the truth is relative to what your employee culture really looks like from their eyes. For this step I use an anonymous "Employee Happiness Survey." This survey provides your employees with a chance to give their input on what is working and what isn't working in the culture, and provides many of the answers on what actions are needed in order to change what isn't working. Depending on the results, a few employee interviews may also be used for additional information.

If you have any questions about how an Employee Happiness Survey would work for your organization, just give me a call.

Next month we will look at the next step that is critical for creating your Dream Team.

ON THE MOVE

This last month I had the opportunity to work with a six person senior leadership team in a two day leadership development retreat, deliver leadership workshops for the Leadership Sarasota County and the Leadership Lakeland programs, and help the Boys & Girls Club look at ways to develop even better team work and to develop their Team Agreements.

If you are part of a group who is looking for a keynote speaker or a workshop presenter, please have them take a look at the Keynote Speaking page on my website at www.NextLevelAchievement.com

BUSINESS TIPS

I have a friend and a peer in Ohio, named Jim, that I met a couple of years ago who helps companies look at creative ways to integrate "Lean strategies" into their organizational culture and I adapted the terms "Builders and Destroyers' from him. You may find them useful when looking at who your best employees are and why.

Builders = Good listeners, focused on others & the organization as well as themselves, see potentials & possibilities, and have a positive attitude.

Destroyers = Don't hear or listen, only focused on themselves, typically sees the problems & "can't do's", and often have a negative attitude.
