Painting Mirrors on 94-04

This is my encounter when painting my 03 Mustang Mach 1 mirrors.  This is only my experience and you do this modification at your own risk.  I do not take any responsibilites for any issues that you may have with this modification.

How to paint your 94-04 Mustang Mirrors.  You will need your paint code (to give to painter) and couple cans of primer paint, and some sand paper.

200 Grit for roughing surface
600 Grit for smoothing surface after primer
2 cans Dupli-Color Filler Primer – (high build formula) FP101 Grey Filler
1 Medium Screw Driver (flat head)
1 Medium Screw Driver (phillips head)
3/8 Drive Socket Set
Torq Bits (star drivers)
4 hours - Prep (1 Hour removal, 1 hour prep, 2 hour paint sand paint) Guess
2 days at the painters

Start by removing the cover on the speaker of the Mach 460 sound system.  See photo below.

Insert a screw driver in the panel at the top and slowly remove the connection.  Then pull up on the panel to remove from the door.

Pull the panel up gently and remove the electronics connections.  One set snap in and you can use a small screw drive to remove the snap in and the unscrew the window connection.

You need to unscrew the speaker and remove the plug in the rear of the speaker.  You will also have to disconnect the mirror electronics in the door panel.  It really helps to have small hands to do this, but can be done with medium sized hands fine.  Then the connector to the mirror is connected to the door, just pull straight out and it will come out pretty easy.  Don't break it!  It will be needed to keep rattles out of the door.

The picture below shows the connection on the door.  The connector slides down on a plastic piece.  This is also the connector that will be connected to the door.

Remove the three nuts on the back of the mirror and feed the line through the hole in the door.  There should be a foam part on the mirror that needs to be removed once the mirror is removed from the door.

As you can you by opening up the mirror you can see the tabs that cover the circular motor.  There are 8 tabs on all sides of the motor and you can stick a small / medium flat head screw driver in there and gentley pry them up.  Then you will be able to remove the glass mirror to expose the motor.

Gently remove the prongs on the mirror with a small / medium size screw driver.  They will be stubborn, but once you get them started they will remove much easier.  Then you will need to remove the innards of the mirrors.   This requires two different torq star drivers.  You have to remove the three small torq bit on the electric motor to get to the two underneath. Remove the 4 Star screws (2 inside mirror 2 outside) 2 on the inside miror and 2 on the outside that would be closes to door.  Then remove electronic mirror parts and the metal frame after all torq bits have been removed.

Also remove the three outside bolts that screw into the mirror.

After removal of all electronic and metal parts on the mirrors, then you have to wash the mirrors with Dawn dish soap in order to clean them and make sure to get any grease or wax off of the mirrors.  Paint will not stick to wax or grease, so wash them good.  Next you will began to sand the mirrors with 220 grit until you scuff up the whole mirror.  They should be dull and try to take as much of the rough surface out of the mirror as possible.  Once done sanding the outside of the mirror you need to was them again in Dawn dish soap.

I place all of the parts from each mirror in Zip Lock bags to make sure I had the exact same parts from each mirror.  I left the foam parts in the seat to the side they belonged to!

Take 220 grit sand paper and sand the outside of the mirror completely like mentioned above.  Make sure to scuff up all of the surfaces of the mirrors so they are ruff. Wash again completely!

sand.jpg

I used wet dry sand paper which had a multiple grit pack as we will use additional paper to wet sand after the first coat of primer.  (600 Grit sand paper)  I used a can of filler primer to help smooth out the mirrors so when they are painted they will be nice and smooth. (Dupli-Color Filler Primer – high build formula) FP101 Grey Filler

Once dry then wet sand with 600 hundred grit and add another coat.  Make sure you let dry thoroughly between coats.   I did this about 3 time to make sure the mirrors were coated and smooth for the paint.  If you jump the gun and don't let them dry you will make much more work for yourself.  Take your time and give yourself plenty of time to do this.

I visited several dealers to get them painted and it turned out many wanted around 100.00 bucks to paint them.  This is for a quart of paint so if you are forced to pay this amount tell them you want to have what paint is left because it cost about 80.00 dollars a quart.  I found a friend who works at a Ford collision center and he painted them both for 30.00.  If you have ‘friend’ in the business try to get him to do this, as it is much cheaper.

Reasemble the mirrors back together.  I found it easier to put all items from each mirror in a platic zip lock bag so that the left and right parts stayed seperated.  As you can see the mirrors turned out great and they add so much to the car.  This is a an easy project and should be how Ford does it from the factory.  Saves a few dollars I am sure but a fun cheap project.

Hopefully I will continue some of these projects for you and keep you posted on how to do these inexpensive mods.
