Since 2004, Venturing Crew 800 has supported the Baker to Vegas Law
Enforcement Relay Race as a super activity to gain experience in emergency communications and incident support logistics. Coordinated by Communications Support Services (K6CSS), Crew 800 supports the San
Bernardino Police Department and other law enforcement running teams by providing radio operators and incident support staff.
Radio operators of Crew 800 staff the San Bernardino Police
Mobile Command Post, other fixed control / relay stations coordinating the race as well as ride in chase and catcher
vans following the runners to monitoring the runner's health, safety and performance during the race. In addition to operating the MCP and staffing vans members of the crew also provide logistical
support to our assigned teams.
The race course runs through a very rugged, desolate desert area of
Southern California / Nevada where mobile telephone service and conventional communications are unreliable. The race starts in Baker, California on a Saturday
and finishes on Sunday Morning in Las Vegas. Environmental conditions can range between daytime temperatures in the 100 to snow and low temperatures
in the 30’s at night in the mountain pass area. Crew 800's ability to communicate in remote and adverse locations
using amateur radio coupled with our emergency medical response training increases the safety of the runners and other
race participants.
Crew 800 is pleased to have this opportunity to develop our emergency
response skills in a challenging and rewarding environment as part of our training to be of service to the community.
