The
annual canoeing training is conducted by the council High Adventure Training Team advisor, with Mrs. Paula Boothe
as the lead instructor.
The
first day is usually conducted at a lake where participants are taught all the requirements of the canoe merit
badge plus received tips and instruction in advanced techniques.
The
following weekend is spent on the water in San Diego's Mission Bay where the participants paddle their canoes about 8 miles,
cook a "utensil free" lunch and canoe back to Camp Fiesta Island. The “Salty Rat” course consists of 16
miles of scenic waterways to practice and refine canoeing skills.
Frequently a delicious pot luck dinner
concludes the day where the participants prepare and enjoye Dutch oven prepared entrée’s and desserts.
Who said training classes had to be dull
and boring? This course was both fun and informative! Can't wait until next year!
