The airwaves were abuzz this weekend with the voices of scouts all over the world exchanging news
and notes on topics ranging from their favorite sports teams to their latest merit badges. Joining them were the voices
of scouts from Yucaipa's Venturing Crew 800 and local Cub and Boy Scouts invited to stop by the Yucaipa Valley Amateur Club
Station on Saturday. The event this weekend was the 50th Jamboree On The Air (or JOTA) which also celebrated the
100th anniversary of World Scouting.
Jamboree On The Air brings scouts from all over the world together via the medium of amateur
radio where they exchange ideas, fellowship and renew the scouting ideals found in the scout oath and scout law. Scouts
from Venturing Crew 800 chatted with other scouts and amateur radio operators in Canada, Mexico and many troops in the USA.
Hosting the event for local Cub and Boy Scouts, the Venturers (many who are themselves licensed
ham radio operators) shared the experience with younger scouts who left excited about the new / old technologies of amateur
radio and the wonderment of communicating around the world without the benefit of wires.
