Years ago, my grandfather had both of his legs cut off above the knees by a train. As a consequence, he had to use wooden legs that clamped onto his stumps; they came complete with yellow argyle socks and black shoes. He used those wooden legs for 17 years, and when he died, my parents stored them up in the attic. I was only one year old when grandpa died, and about the only thing I knew about him were those wooden legs in the attic. As children, we would all tremble in fear if we were asked to go up into the attic to fetch something. I feared those wooden legs, expecting them to get up and chase me down the stairs at any moment. I wondered why my parents kept those legs in the attic all those years. Why didn't they just throw them out? They were of great use to grandpa, but certainly were of no use to us. As children we didn't understand them, and we feared them. They were obsolete. They were meant for another time. Another person . . . a person long gone. Isn't that a lot like traditional religion and the Bible? Aren't they our 21st century "legs in the attic"? We don't understand most of the religious rituals we practice or the Bible passages we read, because they were created in a different time for different people. People who are long gone. People who left this earth CENTURIES ago. Maybe that's why so much of it scares us. Maybe that's why it doesn't resonate with many of us. Maybe that's why we fear God instead of loving God. We've progressed so much in 2,000 years. Government, transportation, communications, technology, medicine, science, agriculture, industry . . . you name it, and we have changed and improved over the past 2,000 years. All except for religion. We are still trying to communicate with God the way we did back in the days of crucifixions, donkeycarts and scrolls. Doesn't that strike you as a little odd? We are we so afraid to get rid of the "legs in the attic"? There is a 21st century way of thinking about God and ourselves. There is a 21st century way of communicating with our Creator. And it all starts with discovering your Personal Connector Word to God.
