A History of the “OC Gaming Group”

The “OC Gaming Group” was a collection of gamers located mainly in Orange County, California, though many were also from the neighboring San Gabriel valley.  After first coming together in the fall of 1973, they later formed the Armchair Strategists Club in February 1975, which went on to sponsor the original ORCCON conventions in 1977, 78, and 79.  After January 1980 the group reorganized as Strategicon, sponsoring both ORCCON and GATEWAY conventions for several years from 1981 onwards, and then later reorganized again as the Games Trust.  In 1986 the group began meeting at Cal Poly Pomona under the auspices of the club there, and then returned to Orange County in 1991, where it eventually ended up at Brookhurst Hobbies.  What follows is a history of the group, largely taken from records and notes made at the time.

The Armchair Strategists Club

Appearing below are links to the meeting records of the Armchair Strategists Club, beginning in February 1975, as taken down by your author, Mark Snowden.  Until February 1979 the records were written out as full narratives soon after the events they dealt with, and are transcribed verbatim, except to correct spelling errors and typos.  After that time, until the effective end of the club in January 1980, only notes were taken, sometimes brief and sometimes substantial, and the meeting records are reconstructed from these.  During this entire period meetings were held on Saturday evenings.

The Brookhurst Irregulars

After the group left Cal Poly Pomona in June 1991 it was designated the Brookhurst Irregulars, though that name was almost never used by anyone involved, in view of the fact that there was no longer any formal club organization.  Having acquired his first real computer system in the spring of 1993, your author, Mark Snowden, was inspired to use a word processor (Ami Pro) to write out full narratives of the games he was involved in, also mentioning other events in passing.  Meetings were held almost every Friday evening, but later on your historian attended them only at more extended intervals, and in any event ceased keeping records after May 1997.  The .pdf files linked to below were converted directly from the Ami Pro originals.
