We are playing daily ...

Majesty

by MacPlay

We love this game. We can't get enough of it and can't wait for more scenarios to download. The demo one is so much fun we each played it four times. It really helped us in playing the real game.

Risk II

by MacSoft

We like the tournament levels the most. It took a little while to get used to the playing style but then we started kicking butt.

The Sims and Livin' Large

by Aspyr

We play this a lot too but not as much as Majesty. A great game for kids too. Helps them see reality if they play it straight.

Baldur's Gate

by Bioware, Graphsim, Black Isle

Great RPG game. We like using the hint book since some of us have families and are busy parenting. Our children like it too. Great game.

Sin

by MacPlay

We are waiting for our review copy so we are playing the demo that we downloaded from MacPlay and love it. The story line makes it much more fun than some of the other 1st person shoot 'em ups. When we played it at the Expo it was awesome there too. The price is not bad at $29.95 so go get it.

Monopoly

by MacSoft

The same old game has gotten better with this 3d version of the game. Having the choices of cities to play in makes it much more fun. Now if they could add towns like Simsville, StarTrekville, StarWarsville, Dungeons and Dragons ville that would ice it. Great game our kids love to play it.

Star Trek Voyager Elite Force

by Aspyr

Wow! Another 1st person game but now we are in the TV show Star Trek Voyager. A fun game - be careful not to shoot your teammates. Keyboard commands are on the back of the jewel case which is nice for learning the game. My daughters loved it - especially figuring out the puzzles to the next area. They won the first level in no time.

In 2000, this is what we were playing...

Our list of what we were playing in '99...

Quest for Glory V by SierraFX
This new hybrid game also in the windows section of the CompUSA store for $49.95 is a great new game for us Macgamers to play. It takes time and downloading hints from the web is well worth it. The box is listed two ways one with the hint book and one without. Be sure to pick up the right one. The hint book starts a great beginning walkthru as a thief. The download hints told us to pick up a Paladin online, the best of all players to start with. Follow the hints or try it on your own. The kids we had test it found it really fun without any reading of any manuals. They were off solving quests and sleeping in the inn and drowning in the ocean. Try it for you role players it is great!

RedJack by THQ
The best new 3-cdrom hybrid game out there. Only $19.99 at CompUSA and well worth it. Look for it in the windows section of the store (and complain that one they didn't put a copy of it in the Mac section and two that when it is printed on the sales receipt it prints as a Win95 program not a hybrid which hurts mac sales reporting). First person adventure game. Be a pirate. Many puzzles to solve but enjoyable for all ages. The nine-year-olds we had test it were gungho to play it everyday. Sword fighting takes time but once you get past that one, on to the ship and the high seas. Look for Lyle at the cove and get that shark. This is a great game that will keep you busy for quite a while. It will even work on a 5200/75 that we tested it on, though a bit slow, still playable. There is a 900 number for hints if you get stuck, but you won't need that just keep trying different ideas and eventually a solution comes. We can't wait for the sequel.

Heroes of Might and Magic II by New World Computing
We still play this game every week if not everyday. The kid testers start new games whenever it gets to hard or take it to a friends and play a multi-player game. They even beat the older kids. We hope New World wakes up and makes a Mac version of Heroes III soon. This is a great game for roleplayers and adventures. It is well done and always fun. Though it gets too hard at the medium to end game. It is fun for the whole family.

Diablo by Blizzard Entertainment
A hybrid with hint book for only $29. It is a role playing adventure game most of which takes place in the dungeon of the church. A fine game and great for the most over 10 years of age. The younger ones tend to hide the screen on boot up because of the devil looking character and then it is fine from then on. Also available for the Sony Playstation (2-player mode) the adults and kids can all play this dungeons and dragons type game. Easy to get to the second level or third. The Butcher on level two takes time killing if you don't figure it out. Use the hint book for help on that one.

Unreal by MacSoft
Is a great game for the faster PowerMac. It requires 70 to 90mb of RAM. Better turn on that virtual memory up high for this one. A great new doom-type game. Probably the best so far. If you pick the easy level no monsters for a while so you might want to go to the next higher level for the fun of it. If you have a slower Mac forget it. Buy a new Mac or wait on this one.

Shattered Steel by Logicware
This MechWarrior clone type game is fun. Though lots of keys for commands can slow down the learning curve with fast keyboard it is playable. We were using a Gravis GamePad and one person would use the arrow keys to get us in closer or farther away and use 'T' for target and the other would center and shoot with the gamepad. It was fun playing this way two people against the enemey. We got to level four without too much problem but then we died. The game has a lousy manual with no instructions in the box just the cdrom and the pictures of the various robots etc and keyboard commands. So we were guessing on what to do next but we had a good time. We feel MechWarrior has some slick features but this one was fun we couldn't wait to play it again.

Dr. BrainThinking Games Puzzle Madness by Knowledge Adventure
Is the new one for the kids for the hybrid side of things. The children testing it love it though there is a bit of wasted time waiting for the characters to finish talking. It is a challenge to solve the various puzzles. Three levels of play keep it going for a while. $20 at CompUSA.

Opinions by the Mac Games staff

Tell the stores you buy from that if they sell you a hybrid game it should be listed on the receipt as a hybrid not as a Win'95 product. Also if a Mac game is in the windows section because it is a hybrid tell the store manager about this too. They would sell more of these games and more people would come to the store if they knew there were more games in the Mac section. If they put the 5-10 hybrids they have in the Windows section over in the Mac section that would produce a stronger presence for the Mac and a higher volume of sales for games. Then people wouldn't always turn to mailorder for their software and game purchases. If they are selling so many iMacs they should want to increase the software section in their store to support their sales and on and on. Even a separate section of the store for only hybrids would be an easy solution. That is what one of my windows friends suggested. That way if they have friends with both platforms it is easier to make buying decisions. It also makes it nice for gifts and parties to know that they can bring their cdrom over to play with because it runs on both.

Rare and Old Games

Some of our favorite old Mac Games that we played on our MacPluses are PT-109, MacRogue (b/w), Submarine Simulator, Gato (sub simulator) (b/w) Mouse Stampede, MacManager. We will also be selling some of our old MacPlus/512 software such as the ones mentioned above in the near future. Highest bidder wins. These are all black and white games with original boxes....maybe on e-bay they will be auctioned off or to the highest bidders that email us by 4/1/2000.

Recent bid: $15 for Gato...we are hoping for much higher to sell the original game, disks, box, and manuals.

We have a large collection of old mac games ready for bid.
