Made some Awesome Pillows!!!, May 21, 2007
I bought this because a friend told me about it. I had never really sewed much more than a straight
line for a hem or to fix a split seam. After reading through Christopher's book I went out and bought a new Baby Lock machine
and have made all of the pillows in the book. I can't get enough of it!!!!

Nejman, Christopher. Christopher
Nejman's Pillows: Designer Sewing Techniques. Krause. 2007. c.127p. illus.
ISBN 978-0-89689-403-7. pap. $22.99. FIBER CRAFTS
Cashing in on the current interest in felting, many sewing-machine manufacturers have come
up with ways to do needle felting faster and more easily by machine, either via a special needle-punch accessory on a standard
sewing machine or a dedicated punching machine. Here, designer and sewing instructor Nejman creates 15 designer art pillows
using machine felting, decorative stitching, and layer upon layer of fibers, fabrics, and embellishments. He walks readers
step by step through each process, illustrating his instruction with more than 200 close-up color photos. These projects will
be stepping-off points for experienced sewers or quilters. Recommended for libraries collecting art-quilting and creative-sewing
books.
I
got this book to get some pointers on making something like this pillow and others I've seen in upscale furniture stores
lately. However, this book is really about pillows as art. The techniques used include punching, decorative stitching and
mucho embellishment. Overall, I can happily recommend the book if you are interested in these techniques or just want to enjoy
the eye candy.
Some of the more useful points (for me) included using invisible zippers as closures (there is quite
a nice tutorial for that) and doing a little something on the back of the pillow as well. I loved his suggestion of digitizing
your signature and embroidering that on the pillow back. Once again, though, this is treating the pillow as a piece of art
rather than something that you toss off of the bed each night before turning in, which is more my speed. Mr. Nejman did inspire
me to corral my various presser feet to improve my efficiency. Additionally, there is a nice suppliers list at the end of
the text.
The author sounds like he would be really fun to take a class from and his interests are varied: web designer,
hair stylist and make up artist. His website is interesting (www.christophernejman.com), but heavy on the graphics. Finally,
hooray to my library for purchasing this book at my request!
Does this book have clear illustrations or photographs? Fantastic photos which are very good illustrations.
Would
you recommend this book as a MUST HAVE? Yes. Christopher Nejmans pillows may be a bit "over the top" when it comes to design,
but they are fun to look at and very inspiring. It takes your felting machine in a whole new direction! Now you can "punch"
clothing fabrics to make a really beautiful pillow. You can take his ideas and tone them down to your own taste.
The
excellent illustrations and directions make creating pillows a breeze. The directions for felting or "Punching" the pillows
are excellent and work very well. I was able to create a pillow in about two hours with the help of this book.
I think
this is such a fun book to have, everyone should have one if you own any brand of felting machine!

Christopher Nejman's Pillows
Let me preface this review by saying, I'm not normally one
who enjoys making a lot of home decor items. Sure I'll make shams, curtains, pillows, but it's not the type of sewing that
I typically delight in. I do, however, love looking at 'idea' books and Christopher Nejman's Pillows is definitely one
of them.
I haven't bought a pillow from a store in years - I can't
bring myself to pay $60 (a pillow mind you) for something that can be easily made for much less. However, most of my pillows
are fairly simple - maybe a trim here or there or a slightly different style, but boring in comparison to those found in this
book! Christopher Nejman provides the reader with 15 different projects all embellished with a variety of trims, beads, fusible
fibers, needle punching, crystals - creating miniture works of art in each design (I can only imagine how much these pillows
would cost if you had to buy them).
In addition to the projects themselves, a number of techniques
are discussed that help the reader achieve some of the projects as well as the tools and materials needed. If you're having
difficulty tracking down some of these items there is a nice resource directory in the back of the book. If you love designing
pillows, looking at home decor eye candy books, or just love making an art piece in fabric, then this publication is for you!

Wow!, March 1, 2007
I have been waiting for this book since I heard it was to be published. I had seen Christopher's
work and loved it so feared I might be disappointed in the book. After all, how can one convey the same visuals as on a video.
Well, it has been done. The pillows are stunning and the instructions very clear. Definitely a book worth the wait. I plan
to get started tomorrow.

Yikes. I want to make
pillows. I met Christopher Nejman at his book signing at CHA. The
man knows how to sew. He taught me more in ten minutes than I learned in four years of fashion school. I just read through the book tonight. Even if you don't want to make pillows, it is an amazing way
to collage fabric. Plus, it convinced me that I need a machine for felting. The images
are lush, and the techniques are excellent. Plus, the book is under $16 on Amazon right now! Today was my rubberstamping lecture at the store. I had a great crowd and lots of fun demonstration. It tired me out
though. I am taking the night off to watch some TV.

Chris,
You have every right to be proud of your book. And
yes I am reading it as well as marveling at the photos.
This is a book that will NOT be put away on a shelf with
other books. My husband was an artist and when he created something good he wanted people to enjoy it. I
think artists are like that and I marvel at creative people.
