Living in 2050 wasn’t so bad. Food delivered itself. Cars flew. But
something wasn’t quite right for one fifth-grader, Master Inventor Zev.
For just about everybody else, life was perfect. But for Zev and his brother
Torse, the world needed one more thing. They weren’t sure what, but it needed it.
One day after school, while Zev piloted their speeder home, Torse said "I
think I know what we need to invent, then build a prototype of: a plastoid molecular body armor."
"Good idea, Torse," agreed Zev, then went back to piloting the speeder.
When they got home, they did their homework, then went straight to the lab
to see what materials they would need. When they had figured out what they needed, they had it delivered the next day at the
door when they got home from school. The two brothers brought in the boxes of materials and put them in the lab. Since it
was Friday, they had no homework: therefore, they could work on designing the new body armor.
Later that night when they were called down to dinner, they talked about
what they were designing, and made their parents swear they would keep it top secret. All Saturday, Zev and Torse were hardly
seen. The same happened the next day.
But since Monday was a school day, they had to take about a seven-hour break,
though to them it seemed to take a year. When the end-of-school bell dinged, Zev and Torse jumped into the speeder and went
straight home. When they got there, Torse thought it would be a good idea to give the speeder a good check-over. As it happened,
that was a good idea, because they found a tracker on the bottom of the speeder. "Look out!" said Zev, just as two speeders
came barreling towards them.
"We need to bust that tracker!" said Torse. So he ripped off the tracker
and broke it in half. Instantly, the two speeders lost their course and headed for home. But since they did it at the same
time, and since it was a one-speeder street, they crashed.
"Whew, that was close!" said Zev.
"Too," said Torse.
"Let’s take some time off the body armor to make a defense mechanism
for the speeder," said Zev.
"No!" persisted Torse.
"Okay, okay…" said Zev.
After they decided to go back to work on the body armor, they went inside
fast. Forgetting all about their homework, they went straight to their lab.
A few hours later, Torse emerged, exhausted and dazed, and said, "Well, the
good news is that we completed it. I’ll be a monkey’s evil uncle!" Torse promptly collapsed. A white-gloved hand
picked Torse’s body up and out of the way. Then Zev appeared, smiling and greasy, wearing the world’s first plastoid
molecular body armor.
