February 14 ~ Yamhill County Camera Club
minutes
Stuart began the meeting with announcements
(sorry I missed the first few minutes!).
There are several things going on this
weekend….
John Shaw ~ Rocky Mountain school of photography
~ Mt Hood field trip - McMinnville Artwalk.. Our own Craig Pifer is the featured artist at Union Block, and Hidden Treasures
gallery (Sandi’s gallery) is featuring color pencil artist Wendy Thompson
(friend of fellow photo club member Ed Eisneberger) during the Artwalk weekend!
Due to the numerous activities and lack
of interest the Mt. Hood field trip was cancelled.
Would we like to have the Forest Grove
Camera Club and out club do a joint fieldtrip(s)? Sure ~ the more the merrier!
The trip to Basket Slough trip was well attended. Field trips are for fun (be
sure to bring your wet suit when Michelle is around), socializing, and learning more about photography from each other. We
had a great time and got some great shots!
Question about the showing of the ‘Best
of …’ and the ‘Top 80’ slides, to show or not to show? The group attending was split. Stuart is asking
for input on this topic – do we learn/gain information from these showings or not.
If not, we can save a couple of $$ by not subscribing to them. Be prepared
to vote at the next meeting.
Stuart presented some ideas on a “Mentor
series”. Are we interested in a one on one pairing of folks with like interest? Example: someone who has knowledge or
expertise in a certain area - paired with someone who has an interest in that area and would like to expand his or her knowledge.
Yes!!
Did everyone receive the last newsletter?
Many did not. Jeremy put together a wonderful newsletter - complete with the submitted photos! Great job Jeremy! Thank you!!
Please ~ make sure we have a correct email address for you so you can receive the newsletter, field trip information and other
bits of interest!
Jim shared results from previous entries
-
Both Debbie (Shout) and Craig (Yellow rose)
received ribbons for their entries, with 22 points each.
Debbie’s latest submission –
“Callas” received 23 points! Awesome job Debbie!!
We viewed and voted on 4 proposed logos,
presented by Craig. Choice #3 was chosen, with it’s black and white version reserved for print materials where it would
be most appropriate. Thanks for you work on this Craig!
Guests Lois Ramsey and Trish Patton were
introduced, and became new members! Welcome to the group!!
The News Register Saturday ‘Connections’
section is running a photo contest of sorts: the following information is taken from the News Register website;
……
we're inviting every Yamhill Valley resident to participate in our ongoing, most-likely monthly, OUT and ABOUT mystery photo
contest. Winners will be awarded News-Register T-shirts, along with publication of their names in this section. All photo
entrants will receive a News-Register coffee mug. Those who submit photos selected for publication will receive at T-shirt.
There are two ways
you can take part:
1) You can test
your visual knowledge of the valley by trying to correctly identify the photo or photos each month.
2) You can submit
your own mystery photos and test the knowledge of other readers. Put a digital camera in your pocket so, when the opportunity
arises, you are ready to snap a shot of a place around the valley you think will pose a challenge to valley trivia buffs.
If your photo is accepted, you'll get a chance to bask in a bit of local fame - and perhaps even the pleasure of stumping
those who think they know their home stomping-grounds inside and out.
The rules are relatively
simple:
1) Photos may be
e-mailed to me in the universal j-peg format at kklooster@newsregister.com.. Alternatively, they may be dropped off for me
here at the News-Register office, located at 611 N.E. Third St. in the heart of McMinnville's Downtown Historic District,
either as prints or electronic j-peg images burned onto a CD. Please be aware that newspaper publication requires at least
200 dots per inch of resolution at the published size, or about three times the 70 dots per inch for web posting.. You can
accomplish this through relatively large image sizes, relatively high resolutions or some combination of the two. For prints,
that means an image fully filling the standard 4 by 6 format or partially filling a larger format like 8 by 10. Size and resolution
are critical to our ability to deliver quality images on newsprint.
2) We're looking
for commercial structures, residential structures, local landmarks or scenic views captured in a place readily viewable from
a regularly traveled street or road. An arterial in Sheridan would qualify, but an alley in McMinnville would not.. Principal
routes to Amity would qualify, but gravel roads leading into the hills east of Yamhill would not. Scenic photos should include
some sort of landmark or activity directly associated with the location. A reasonable clue or set of clues for the reader
is essential.
3) Your photo must
be taken somewhere in the Yamhill Valley, which we define to include everything from Dundee on the east to Grand Ronde on
the west and Gaston on the north to Buell and Zena to the south. It's a lot of territory to work with.
4) All or a significant
portion of the subject should be shot so it would be easily identifiable if viewed from the roadside. The exception might
be a dramatically composed close-up of a building detail that should be readily identifiable as a part of that structure..
Please don't hesitate to be creative. That will be a definite consideration in choosing photos for publication.
5) Contributors
of photos selected for contest use will be contacted prior to publication of their names and photos so they are not caught
by surprise. So will contributors of the best set of answers to each pictorial puzzler. Please don't expect payment for photos.
Submission assumes the right to publish without compensation, other than the prizes mentioned above.
6) We have developed
a combination form for submission of photos and/or photo quiz answers..
You will find it
reproduced in printed form here. However, you may find the electronic form posted at www.newsregister.com/mysteryphoto/ more
useful. The electronic version includes a button for automatic e-mail transmission to me. It also includes attachment capability,
so you can send in a photo at the same time. Each photo requires a separate submission.
The Yamhill County Courthouse website
is up and running. It contains several photos from members of our group. You have to do a bit of maneuvering through it to
find them (there are none on the “who’s in jail” page J)
We had fun viewing photos from the
field trip.
Stuart and Shannon gave a wonderful presentation
on ‘Filters’. A brief recap ~
--There are several
types of filters - the regular screw on - or the Cokin type series. (The Cokin filters require a ring adapter (screws onto
your lens) and a mount that slides onto the adaptor.) Filters are used for several different reasons and different effects.
Words of advice from Stuart
--*Get the best image
in your camera first!
--*Buy the best
filter you can afford! Singh-Ray is an example of a top of the line filter. Some places to purchase filters are: B&H (online)
NAPP members receive a discount), Pro Photo Supply in Portland, Focal Point in Dallas, and of course Shutterbug..
Stuart and Shannon shared many before and
after examples of the use of filters. Thanks for the wonderful presentation!!
Next month Craig will share how to convert
a photo to black and white.
Competition followed with this months entries
