Preparing for a Test!
My tests are easy IF you study!  Here are some tips:
  • Learn ALL of your vocabulary words.  Make flash cards, write out the definitions in your own words (5 words or less) or put them to music.  The bottom line is YOU HAVE TO LEARN THE VOCABULARY!!  Get your parents to quiz you.  Many test questions include vocabulary words making it difficult to understand what the question is asking if you don't know your words.  Also, some questions are direct definitions of vocabulary words.  You will NOT keep your A+ by guessing!
  • Organize your notes.  If you organze your notes you will have a better understanding of the timing of the events and who was involved.  Remember this is hiSTORY - you have to know the story.
  • Review the lessons covered in the textbook.  Read each red or blue heading and ask yourself if you know what the section is about.  If not, READ the section!

Previewing a Reading Assignment

Step 1: Read the TITLE of the section – What do you think it is about? What do you already know about this subject?

Step 2: SKIM the INTRODUCTION – This will give you a general idea about what you will be reading, and perhaps an important detail or two.

Step 3: Read the HEADINGS of each subsection – What do you think it is about? What do you already know about this subject?

Step 4: LOOK at the VISUALS – Look at every picture, chart and map in the section. Read (do not skim) each caption or explanation above, below or next to the visuals.

Step 5: Scan for SPECIAL TERMS – when you see a word or phrase in BOLD lettering, read the sentence above, the sentence the term is in, and the sentence that follows each bold faced item.

Step 6: Skim the SUMMARY – since our text does not really have a summary paragraph at the end of each section, look at the graphic (usually #2) in the assessment area.

Step 7: Skim the REVIEW QUESTIONS – Skimming the review questions will help you focus as you go back to read the section for UNDERSTANDING!

General Study Tips
The easiest way to learn material is with constant review.  This doesn't mean you have to try to memorize everything covered in a day, but if you do the following EACH DAY, school will be a snap!  DO your RE's and you will find your grade will be REWARDING!!
  • Look over any notes taken in class or any worksheet completed. RE-viewing
  • Skim through any reading you did in class.  RE-reading
  • Talk to your parents and tell them what you discussed in class. RE-peating
  • Learn five vocabulary words each night. RE-membering
  • Complete your homework as soon as you get home from school.  That way you won't forget any important verbal directions. RE-sponsible
