| Welcome! |

|
| This week we will learn about the early United States. |
Wednesday Tutoring - Tutoring for any student who would like the
help is usually held each Wednesday after school in my classroom until 4:00 PM. These sessions usually
deal with the content or skills we are covering in class and can help students perform better on classroom quizzes and tests.
There are also some special topics offered each semester - like computer literacy, test taking skills, or word processing
instruction - so watch for the weekly announcements here and in the classroom. After School tutoring
will continue on WEDNESDAY this week. We will be preparing for the District Semester Final.
Setting Goals!
Remember, what
you do THIS semester will affect your participation in extra curricular activities here at Cope, and will determine what
classes you will be eligible to take next year in high school. 8th grade COUNTS!
What you do, and what you do not do will determine YOUR future. YOU will determine your future. YOU have
the POWER to make life a positive or a negative. Remember, step by step - every little improvement counts!
Grades will be posted in class - approximately every two weeks. Grades posted last week include Community Service
(first semester project requirement) grades. "Nearly-semester grades" will be posted on Monday (12/15), but the REAL
Semester Grades will not be posted until after our return from winter break.

Take a virtual tour of the Whitehouse, or one
of the Congressional Chambers. If you have flash player on your computer, watch the video clips on the Whitehousekids.org
site! Yeah, I know you are not KIDS, but the site is cool anyway!
Want to go to college or get a job? Here is a little food for thought. More and more colleges
and employers are checking applicants via the web. Will what you have posted on your MySpace or Blog help you or hurt
your chances of reaching the goals you have set? BloggersBlog had an interesting article about this recently.

"Moral cowardice that keps us from speaking
our minds is as dangerous to this country as irresponsible talk. The right way is not always the popular and easy
way. Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character."

IN THE NEWS!
Describe what led to the increased sectionalism in the United States?
If you lived in the United States during the mid 1800's, would you have supported
an increase in western expansion? (REMINDER: Explain your answer!!)
Bring in an item for "Living History" this week!
Bring something "In the News" to discuss! Remember, if you write up a short paragraph about the article or issue, then
you can earn points on the next QUIZ or TEST.
