This is the begining of my portfolio pages. These are scrolls that go back to when I first started doing calligraphy and illumination for the SCA, sometime around 1981. I don't have pictures for everything I've ever done, particularly for the stuff I did in the early 80s, but this is a good chunk of them.

Valeran do Pico's Award of Arms - 1981

The picture above is the second scroll I ever did. I don't have a picture of the first scroll I ever did (which was Elyramere of Tymberlyne Heyght's AoA). This scroll is tube watercolors on a parchment like paper.

The pictures below is Grimarr of Nordheim's (aka Everard Mead) award of arms, done in 1983. This is done on rag paper with tube watercolors. Grimarr's persona was Viking, so I did the longship illumination with his badge on it.

Clarissa Elana Perrenoud de Guilbert's Dolphin

This was from 1983

The scroll pictured above is Clarissa's Order of the Dolphin Scroll, from around 1983. Again, this is tube watercolor on rag paper. I rather like the detail of the dolphins wrapped around the stem of the vine.

The scroll below is Katarina of Enchanted Lakes' Award of Arms, from 1984. This is, I think, my first one done in gouache, as I did it while staying with Eowyn Amberdrake in the summer before I moved to California. Eowyn kindly loaned me the paper and paints, and her work space.

Matching Dolphin Scrolls 1983 and 1984

These were for Valeran do Pico and his wife, Eileen Rahel do Pico

The two scrolls above were done a year apart, the first one for Valeran do Pico and the second for his then wife, Eileen Rahel do Pico. This was my first set of matching scrolls, and they were done in 1982 and 1983. Tube watercolors on rag paper.

The scroll below is Marco Valerio de Bartolomeo's Award of Arms scroll. I did this in 1983 or 1984. Tube watercolor on rag paper.

Black Taylor of Lochaber's Leaf of Merit 1983

The scroll above is Black Taylor of Lochaber's Leaf of Merit scroll, done in 1982 or 1983. This was my first attempt at doing the checkered background found in so many illuminated manuscripts. Tube watercolors and metallic ink on rag paper.

The scroll below is Richard of Castlenorth's Harp Argent scroll, done around 1984 or 1985. This was my first attempt at a Flemish style of scroll. Gouache on rag paper.

My Porfolio - continue to Page 2

Illuminated manuscripts were done to create books during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, before the advent of printing presses. These pages show my attempts at replicating some of this beautiful art.
