Speaker Building

modula-mts.jpg
These are my new favorites, the Modula MTs

Something that is a big help to folks building speakers is to get others opinions on project they intend to build, so I'm going to do a little of that here. Since I have no measurement equipment It's all subjective.

 Also check out my blog.

It's easier for me to add and edit. It's a pretty chaotic place, but if your new to speaker building you might browse through the archives if you are bored.

The Modula MT

Modula MT

These are the best sounding speakers I have built to date. A noticeable step up in sound quality. Jazz, Rock, Classical, It's like there is no speaker at all, only music. Well worth the $300 in electronic parts.

Thanks to Jon Marsh for the fantastic design. Thanks to Darren and the folks at PE/Dayton/Usher for the fantastic drivers :)

Update: After listening to these for some time, I'd confirm my original impression that these are the best sounding speakers I have built. I would recommend spending the extra 100 bucks over the "More-Pees". The Modulas have a more detail sound and better bass extension.

Building the Modula MTs

Here are the plans

Dayton Budget Project

Wayne’s Dayton budget project is a very good value, If I remember right the electronic parts were less than $120. The mid’s are better than the projects using the classic Dayton 6.5 woofer and the bass is good for this size speaker. There have been quality control problems with the tweeter, but I’ve built quite a few projects with them and have been quite satisfied. The woofer provides supprisingly good bass. The biggest limitation of this inexpensive project is that it lacks that hard hitting bass, but what do you expect it’s only a 5 ¼ inch driver…..

Morel Peerless -"More-Pee's"

This project  was Designed by Wayne J. at speakerbuilder.net The woofers are Peerless and the tweeter is Morel.

This is a great sounding speaker. It has nice detailed bass and excellent clarity in the midrange.

Excellent design Wayne J. !

The more I listen to these the more I like them. These are a big step up from the BR1 all the way around.

DHT

These are our rear surrounds, I built them for about 60 bucks each. They are small and sound great. They do not put out much bass and should be used with a subwoofer. But they are nice and compact, fitting almost out of site.

Like most of most of my projects they were designed by Wayne J. at speakerbuilder.net

D3's

My first speaker building project was the D-3. The plans can be found at Speakerbuilder.net

The electronics cost about $150.00. The MDF and finish will cost between 50 and 150 dollars, I suppose even more if you went with a fancy veneer.

These speakers sound great. They put out allot of sound and allot of bass. These speakers ROCK. If they have a weekness its that the midrange is slightly recessed. But in my opinion you would have to be doing a side by side comparison to notice. Theres another thing that kind of buggs me and thats the cardboard ring or circle arond the front of the 6.5 woofer keeps coming loose.

Also worth noteing, I slightly prefer the sound of these these to the BR1 and the D8 MTM.

D8 MTMs

This Is my sister-in-law Laura's home theater. I built the D-8 MTM main speakers.

The crossover design can be found at speakerbuilder.net and the box at Dave Tenney's site.

Let me tell you these speakers will shake the house! HOLY COW! They sound great too. They sounded even better at Laura's house than ours, I think its becase of the bigger room.

Here are some small speakers I built for my Mom. I used 3 inch Tang Band drivers (purchased at partsexpress) with no filter. The amazing thing with these 3 inch Tang Bands is the value. nothing to buy but the speaker and the box. If I were to do a project like this again though I'd go to http://zaphaudio.com/
and pick his latest design.
I am very impressed with these little drivers. Excellent Imaging, vocals and acoustic instument sound great. This is a better value than fussing around with the NSBs. Obviously they won't have much power handling or bass, so you'll want a sub.
This was my first time working with veneer. I love the results!

Update: After more listening let me again recommend you build one of "Zaph's" projects.

 NSB / Pyramid project.

The 4inch woofers were about a buck each at time. The tweeter is an automotive silk dome Pyramid (265-263) I accidentally ordered this sometime back and it came with a filter.

Originally I tried winding a bunch of #14 solid around a can then zip tying the mess together to create an inductor.  Since then I have installed a "real" .60 inductor in the low pass of the crossover.

My opinion at this point is that they can sound better than most computer speakers you would buy or even my small plastic ghetto blaster. These little guys arn't perfect, they have kind of a nasaly sound, but still worth the 50c they now cost and they can be fun to experment with.

Thanks guys!

BR1's

I had the BR1’s at my house for a year or two. They are now my sisters speakers. For 140 bucks these are a bargain. The 140 Bucks gets you the kit with a nice box.

You can buy the BR1 kit here

Mom's Sub

PE 120w amp

A ton of bass in a tiny package!

front-w-alison.jpg
Quattro 8

I built this to compliment Mom's small Tangband satalite speakers. I'm useing a PE 120w amp and an 8 inch Quattro. The finish is natural birch veneer.  Mom and Dad have a small living room so this is my best try at giving them some good sound at a reasonable cost.

My Sub

subfront.jpg
Quattro 12

subback.jpg
PE 200w amp

I'm pretty pleased with the way this subwoofer project came out. I used the 200w  amp  from PE and the12 inch Quattro. The plans are linked below. I altered them a bit but did not change the volume or port size. I've got about $200 in electronics invested here. I finished it with veneer and oak plywood that was left over from other projects so i didn't have to spend alot on that.

The only other sub I've had in this room is the discontinued PE $99 special. I can tell you this is a serious step up. Theres WAY more sound and it's a cleaner sound.
