Will Washington County, Oregon become a Cool County?  Take Action!

About the Cool Counties Initiative

July, 2007, marked the beginning of the groundbreaking "Cool Counties" initiative, launched by the Sierra Club and three US counties.  All Cool Counties will pledge to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to 80% below current levels by the year 2050, most likely cutting emissions by 2% each year until that goal is reached.  This is the amount by which scientists say we need to reduce emissions all across the country, if we are going to stave off the effects of global warming.  Oregon's counties need to get involved in this movement, and on this web page is dedicated to the campaign that will make Washington County, OR a Cool County.

More on Washington County

The two largest cities in Washington County - Hillsboro and Beaverton - have already become Cool Cities, making the city-level version of the pledge that Washington County now needs to make.  Furthermore, Washington County is part of the Portland Metropolitan Area, which has a reputation as one of the most livable places in the country.  The county should pledge to reduce greenhouse emissions to maintain its image as an environmental leader.  Global warming is of greater concern to the public than ever before; any local government in that is truly committed to sustainability must look for ways to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
