History

“Laurana Wachhorst grew up traveling the globe with her parents. They were devoted as much to their profession as they were to their daughter; both were anthropologists and archaeologists of the highest order. Neither gave much thought to the fact that their daughter was growing up in some of the most dangerous jungles, deserts and mountains on earth. The Wachhorst family survived mostly on dumb luck; their boundless curiosity defused many potentially dangerous situations with native inhabitants of faraway places.

“Laurana’s parents, eager to make their mark, decided that the fitting cap to their academic careers would be the discovery of the mythical city of Pax. They found curious references to this city here and there throughout various philosophical tomes. Legend said that Pax was a city devoted entirely to harmony and research; those tired by the concerns of the world would seek their way to the city seeking refuge. But those that were unworthy of Pax’s paradise would find not paradise at all, but an eternal damnation. The Wachhorsts dismissed such anecdotes as nonsense, but they did believe that a city named Pax might have indeed existed.

“According to their research, the most likely place for Pax to be situated was deep in the bowels of the earth. Though trained spelunkers, the Wachhorsts were not at all prepared for what they found. The poor academics stumbled across a hidden Fifth Column complex and were immediately seized. The Fifth Column troopers overlooked the poor Wachhorst girl, who was hidden in a small crevice, but Mr. and Mrs. Wachhorst were not so lucky. Laurana never saw her parents again. Weeping, she wandered into the tenebrous depths, knowing that death was walking alongside her.

“Luckily, after much wandering, Laurana was found by a Pax patrol. Her parents were indeed correct; Pax not only existed, but thrived, miles beneath the surface. In fact, the city was almost entirely devoted to learning & understanding. For the most part, Pax had been settled by people who had once lived a violent life – who killed, maimed and destroyed – but eventually became sickened by their own actions. The only place where these poor souls could escape their private demons was in Pax.

“Laurana settled in with the residents of Pax, and was raised by the entire community. Everyone loved the child because she possessed an innocence that many had long forgotten existed. And though children were born in Pax from time to time, no child from the surface world had ever been raised within the city.

“As part of her tutoring, Laurana was taught all the arts of war; mostly in order to realize their foolishness, but also to prepare in case anyone ever tried to destroy Pax. Laurana tried hard to absorb her lessons, but to no avail she continued to harbor a deep hatred towards the Fifth Column for murdering her parents. She realized that the thirst for vengeance would be anathema within the serene walls of Pax, so she did her best to conceal her feelings. But as the years passed and Laurana grew into a young adult, she decided to return to the surface world. She openly declared that she was going as a herald of peace; but many city elders understood her true motivations. They despaired that she would need to learn for herself that violence only begets more violence.

“After hearing about the presence of the Fifth Column in Paragon City, Laurana made her way there. She has since given herself the sobriquet “Herald” and is working to bring peace to Paragon City streets. It is only a matter of time before Herald comes into contact and conflict with her hated foe, the Fifth Column…”
