A heroine active in the 1940s, Sister Psyche was instrumental in defeating the villain known as Nemesis when he made an attempt to conquer America after World War II. The long-lived heroine later fought against the Rikti, although the battle left her body into a coma and forced her consciousness to seek out a new host.

History

Sister Psyche is a mutant born with incredible mental powers, but her history prior to 1940s is unknown. Her first recorded appearance occurred in 1945, just after the end of World War II, when the villain known as Nemesis resurfaced in the United States. With many of America's heroes still in Europe recovering from the final battles with the Axis forces, Nemesis had little difficulty storming Washington D.C. and capturing most of the government. More disturbing, "Nemesis had hidden nerve gas bombs throughout the twenty largest cities in America. With the touch of a button he released the deadly toxin, ensuring a painful death to tens of millions if they did not receive the antidote within 24 hours."

America's heroes engaged Nemesis, but dozens were killed by the villain's atom-ray. "However, in the chaos, Sister Psyche managed to use her telepathic powers to pick the location of the [nerve gas] antidote from Nemesis' mind. The rest of the heroes fell back before the metal clad monster's onslaught. Wounded but still mobile, Sister Psyche escaped the scene of the carnage and got word out to the Army. Within hours Dr. Mnemonic had synthesized an airborne version, and the air force and flying heroes were spreading it across the infected cities. Nemesis' poison was neutralized and Washington surrounded. Hundreds of heroes converged on the capitol and joined together for a second march on Washington. They fought through the remainder of Nemesis' forces and thought they had defeated the evil genius himself, only to find that all they had captured was a robot duplicate. Nemesis had escaped once again."

Sister Psyche continued to battle villainy well into the new century. During the Rikti invasion, she helped defeat the aliens, but at a great cost: battling the invaders temporarily burned out her powers and forced the Shalice Tilman into a coma. Eventually, Shalice managed to transfer her consciousness into the body of another hero, whose body she now shares. This unnamed heroine uses the Sister Psyche alias to battle crime and provide other heroes with dangerous missions. It’s unclear whether Shalice is in complete control of her new body, or merely exists as a background consciousness. It’s also unknown whether she will ever be able to return to her own body.

At some point, Sister Psyche detected the fractured mind of the villain known as Malaise and helped him reform. Under Sister Psyche's watchful eye, Malaise has become a respected hero.

The above image appears in COH ads, casting doubt on the redhead's identity and archetype!

sisterpsyche2.jpg

It's unclear when/where the red-headed heroine depicted in numerous City of Heroes promotional materials (and on this site) was identified as the original "Sister Psyche." The official site does describe Sister Psyche being integral to the defeat of Nemesis after WWII, so one can only assume that, if the red-head is indeed Sister Psyche, she either possesses the incredible longevity enjoyed by many other heroes (including the Statesman) or she is an heir to the name. The redhead appears again in the City of Villains trailer.

If there are two different heroes with the Sister Psyche identity, they may have different powers. The powers listed above are for the "current" incarnation of Sister Psyche, and it is assumed that she has many more powers than those listed.

The "energy blast" being fired by Sister Psyche in ads may, in fact, be a manifestation of the Force Bolt power, which is part of the Force Field Power Set. We do know that the modern Sister Psyche has the ability to create a personal force field.
