Requiem was perhaps the most prominent and powerful of the Nazi villains, serving the Axis powers during World War II as the leader of the Fifth Column. Although long believed dead, there is new evidence to suggest that Requiem has resurfaced in Paragon City.

History

During World War II, Requiem proved one of the most important and sinister members of the Nazi regime. As the leader and founder of the Fifth Column, he was instrumental in launching numerous plots against the Allied Forces and America in particular. While it is unknown when Requiem first began serving Nazi Germany, it is believed that he was part of a covert super team sent into Paragon City in 1939. The Fifth Column spied on and sabotaged U.S. shipping and naval development until 1941, when the group finally made their presence known in a violent attack on the navy's Atlantic Fleet stationed in Paragon Harbor. "The attack force destroyed dozens of ships and injured thousands before they withdrew into hiding. The Nazi spies spent the rest of the war wreaking havoc up and down the Eastern seaboard, fighting countless skirmishes with America's own heroes. Under the leadership of the ruthless and deadly Requiem, the Fifth Column killed hundreds and cost the US millions in war materials. In the closing months of the war they became desperate and careless, and heroes like the Statesman brought most of the covert cadre to justice." Requiem, however, escaped captured and went into hiding.

Requiem's activities since World War II have yet to be revealed. It's assumed that he (or someone claiming to be the Nazi war criminal) secretly rebuilt his Fifth Column, gathering resources and soldiers for his covert war. "There is some evidence that the group helped incite social discord and fostered criminal groups across the country. These activities provided the Fifth Column with a continual supply of new recruits and funds for research.

Since the end of the Rikti Invasion, Requiem and the Fifth Column have finally resurfaced. Requiem "has declared all out war on the United States and Paragon City in particular. The group operates out of underground bases and safe houses secreted throughout the city. Thus far, attacks have generally been aimed at frightening the population and disrupting the city's infrastructure. Captured Fifth Column soldiers have revealed little about their organization's plans except that Requiem has only begun to unfold his intentions for the city."

Requiem has been described as the Statesman's "arch-enemy" during World War II. His fate remained unknown until the City of Heroes preview comic, in which Requiem makes a brief appearance. The current Requiem might be the Nazi villain of old, or could be another individual using the same villainous identity.
