One of the bravest warriors to participate in the Rikti War, Hero 1 followed in the footsteps of Great Britain's Hero One. He was a member of the Vanguard and led a team of heroes into the Rikti's home dimension in order to thwart the alien invasion. Unfortunately, the mission seems to have cost Hero 1 his life.

History

When the Rikti first invaded, the world was thrown into disarray. The existing hero organizations were caught off-guard and hundreds died in the initial conflicts. In an attempt to coordinate the efforts of the remaining heroes, the United Nations Security Council formed an international, rapid-response superhero strike team called the Vanguard. At the core of the Vanguard is the Vanguard Elite, a ruling body composed of one hero appointed by each of the Security Council's five permanent member nations. In the Vanguard Elite's initial incarnation, Hero 1 served as the leader of that group.

Although the Vanguard achieved some victories over the Rikti, it was clear that the alien invaders were winning the war. The desperate heroes agreed to undertake a daring plan devised by Dr. Science. To divert attention from the heroes' true target, the Statesman rallied a group of 1,000 heroes known as "Alpha Team" in a full frontal assault on Rikti forces. Meanwhile, Hero 1 led "Omega Team," a strikeforce consisting of fifty heroes charged with infiltrating a Rikti portal base. Under Hero 1's leadership, most of these heroes managed to enter the Rikti's home dimension and destroy a massive power source, preventing the aliens from receiving supplies and reinforcements. While the Rikti were not permanently defeated, they were forced to withdraw.

Hero 1's final fate remains unknown, but it is assumed that he gave his life in the Rikti home dimension in order to save his beloved earth. To honor and remember the selfless sacrifices of Hero 1 and the rest of Omega Team, the Statesman asked all heroes to remove their capes; this symbolic gesture held incredible power because Hero 1's flowing, flag-bearing cape had become symbolic of courage and heroism. The moratorium on wearing capes has only recently been lifted.

There is the remote possibility that Hero 1 has survived and is stranded in the Rikti home dimension. It's possible that Hero 1 could band together with Star Strider or other heroes trapped in that alien realm, but the likelihood of these heroes returning to Paragon City remains slim.
