Mom today

On July 10, 1931- just as the embers on the fireworks for our nation's 155th birthday celebration were dying- a new light came into the world- Bette Jean Elvington.  This is her story- a tribute on her 75th birthday.  Happy birthday, Mom.

Early Childhood

Born in New Haven area, where she played with her cousins- the grandchildren of Peter and Mary Somer Weber of East Haven, CT and her younger sister Ann (shown here with Mom and Grandma).   Went to school at Mount St. Mary's in Newburg NY where her best friend was Mary Ann Fitzpatrick.

High School and College Days

High School years were at Hamden High School where she did just about everything- her year book was amazing- but I've forgotten most of it.
After graduation, she went to the University of Conneticut where she was a member of the Pi Phi sorority, where she met William M. Lieber, the President of the Connecticut Chapter of the Future Farmers of America, and of his fraternity.

Glastonbury Years

They lived in his hometown of Glastonbury CT, where she was the most beautiful woman in town (as I remember it).  Life was very busy taking care of her growing brood.  Her first 5 children were born within the first 6 years of her marriage.  With little ones in tow, she made extra money for the family by selling vegetables on a little stand on Main Street.  One very funny story is how Bill and Mary Rose got some tomatoes.  We simply decided to leave Sue alone for 5 minutes and wait until she got in trouble.  Sure enough, she took off her sunsuit- and there was Mom chasing her naked toddler all the way down Main Street while Bill and I snacked on fresh tomatoes.  On Hale Road, she organized all the Mom's to provide a round robin summer camp for the kids.  Here's a photo of the brood in the Glastonbury days.

Medway Days

In 1959, we moved to Medway, Massachusetts, where she formed a brownie troop- anyone from Mrs. Liebler's West Medway brownie troop out there- I want to hear from you also!  She also lead the Red Cross funding in West Medway one year and was the Avon lady for our portion of town.  As a Avon lady, she was well-loved- anyone remember?  Times we remember from Medway were Mom taking us to the town park and helping us to swim in the summer and skate in the winter.  As a girl, she was a championship swimmer and ice skater, and it was wonderful to see her at this time of our lives.

Coming of Age in Franklin
In 1968 we moved to Franklin Massachusetts and lived in the gambriel colonial- red and white with buckets of geraniums- a home that she was very proud to own and where her 5 oldest children graduated high school and her oldest daughter (me) was married.
At that time, she went to work at Cushing Hospital in Framingham, MA where she was loved by all- she stayed there 20 years.

Moving On to Milford...

Her older five children grown, in 1976, she moved to Milford where she was active at her church.  She was a reader, a Eucharistic minister, and still brings communion to the sick.  She started a ministry to visit the home bound that was very dear to her heart.  For years, she also ran a shelter for feral cats in her back yard (she loves cats and dogs- she's always had a cat since I can remember).
She has 6 living children, 14 grandchildren, and 7? great-grand children.  The following pages and their links are the remembrances that all of her children and grandchildren sent as part of her birthday celebration.

Mary Rose Murrin

In 1978, fell in love with research.  Thought that I would win the Nobel Prize one day.  Worked for a PhD for seven years, and then lost my momentum.  It wasn't the academics- it was the struggle with myself and with poverty.  Even so- I've been at the University of South Florida since 1974- first as an undergraduate, then as a graduate student- and since 1985- provide research support for the Policy Services and Reearch Data Center in the Department of Mental Health Law and Policy at the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute.  My current dream is to build the PSRDC into one of the greatest natural training laboratories for persons wanting to learn public policy analysis using mental health services administrative data.  Another dream is to persue my understanding of the Discipline of Self-Esteem and promote it through this web site.  One of my biggest goals in life is to do something that would radically change the probability that someone would grow up in violence.  Promoting self-esteem is one way that I can fight. Have one son, Robert, who is 18 years old.  He is a creature of passions.  His current passion is music and he is persuing that passion through experimenting with a variety of stringed plucking instruments.  He is the proud owner of an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, a banjo, and an electrin bass guitar.  He is learning a lot about the instruments and how they are constructed.  I'm very proud of him but don't want to say a lot because he's a quiet person and wants to stay in the backround.  Still a creature of passion, still re-building myself, still under construction.  Hope to never be finished.

About me

betty_n_bill.jpg

William Burnham Liebler.

Bill started out homesteading 20 acres of virgin forest.  He was the first of the children to own his own home.  He converted a bus to a camper in Portland Oregon, then drove with his wife and two young daughters to Stone Lake Wisconsin. He built a log cabin from the trees he found there. Now it's a beautifully appointed log home. He has 4 beautiful daughters (Opal, Nicole, Bethany and Sarah) and four grandchildren.  This year they celebrated the 20th anniversary of Rollingwood Nursery.  It started as a small greenhouse outside the house.  Now it's a large business in town with many greenhouses.  There are links to Bethany and Opal's blogs with the latest news of their beautiful children- and you can see Bills whole extended family as you browse.  This is a picture of Mom and Bill at his daughter's wedding.  Have more pictures of Bill and his beautiful family on the links below:

Susan Elizabeth Liebler.

Susan started out working in a self-service gas station part time.  She worked her way up from that to become a regional sales director for a major oil company- one of the only women executives in the oil industry at that time.  Her career ended when they decided that you needed a college degree for her position, since then she has been struggling to raise her children and find a new life.  This is a picture of Susan at Beth's wedding.

Linda Ann Hunt

Linda Ann Hunt.  Linda has always been a great mother- first and foremost her life is for her kids.  Her kids are great- they are the best.  Jenny is a Denny's manager with great kids of her own. Chuck is a minister (or training to be one?).  I remember that when Linda was pregnant, she had a vision that Chuck was going to be part of the dynasty.  We are descended from Jonathan Edwards and if you look at his pedigree- you see that all his family for generations before were ministers- so Chuch is part of that dynasty- the first in our direct line since Jonathan Edwards.  Chuck you have a great predecessor- remember your heritage.  Linda sent a CD, a picture that she drew of me, and a short story (about 10 pages)- she'll have her own page soon as I can get it in.

Michael Robert Liebler

Mike- better known as Mike Roberts to his radio listeners in Vermont- always marched to the tune of a different drummer.  He was a great writer- and his listeners in that little Vermont community got to hear that as they listened to his talk radio show.  Mike inherited some dead air time and turned it into a popular swap show- people called in things that they wanted to give away or sell- and people who wanted them called in to collect them.  Great idea Mike!!  His only daughter Michaela, that never got a chance to meet her Dad, is a National Merit Scholar.  Michaela (and Robert) have their own page here:

Barbara Elvington Liebler.

Everyone thought that Barbara would grow up to be a movie star- she was the most beautiful of all Mom's children growing up.  Instead she became a stay-at-home Mom and raised her children right.  Her life is her kids- Danny, Christa, Jake, and Rochelle- and her foster children (Sue's two boys) Rob and Collin.
She's getting married on September 2 to the love of her life.  Everyone wish her and Jake the best!@

Elizabeth Louise Bennett
(Beth- but the full name is so beautiful- straight out of Pride and Prejudice).  She started out her career working at McDonalds.  Worked her way up to being assistant manager at one of their national demonstration stores.  Graduated from Hamburger University.  Eventually came to work in the telecommunications industry (Media One, then AT&T) helping to achieve the dream of integrating phone, television, and InterNet.  Her part of that dream died a little on 9-11, when the top people in the industry were gathered at the World Trade Center.  Thank God she was not able to make it that day.  Today, she is living a little better quality of life in the banking industry and enjoying the beautiful home recently remodeled by her husband.  SHe  lives in a rose-filled home on top of a hill in the country.  She has two step-children, two foster children, and a grandchild.  Her real children are her two dogs- Rambo and Rocky.

And there you have it- the story of 75 years of a life well lived- abbreviated version.  As more unfolds (and more people send me their stuff), more will be added.

Thanks Mom- for everything.
