Mr. Smithers has been active in political causes at various times in his life. At age 13, he stood on a box on a street corner and exhorted passersby to reelect Franklin Roosevelt. As an adult, he worked in the campagns of presidential candidates George McGovern, Eugene McCarthy, Ralph Nader; and for John Anderson he gathered more petition signatures (3,037) than any other person in the state to put that candidate's name on the ballot in California .

Since 1995, when he and his wife Lorrie moved to Santa Barbara, CA, he’s continued this activism. In 2001, during the city electoral campaign, he helped mayoral candidate Gil Garcia with public speaking. In 2002, he was selected by a caucus of community-based organizations to be one of their representatives on the Steering Committee of the Santa Barbara Regional Energy Alliance.

From 2001 to 2004 he was a Council member of the Green Party of Santa Barbara County and Editor of the Green Scene, its newsletter.

Bill and Lorrie continue to offer the Intensive Acting Seminars they were engaged to provide for performing arts centers in New Orleans and St. Louis, and for the Method Film Festival (2003, 2005, 2006, 2007) in Los Angeles.
