Since
each patient is so complex and unique, I allot three hours for the
first visit and may even go longer if necessary. I listen with a
trained ear and provide a supportive environment, free of all judgment,
where the patient can talk freely about his or her condition. This
extended opportunity to describe ones experience of an ailment
is somewhat unique to homeopathic treatment. Although ten people
may have arthritis, each will describe and experience it differently,
despite the fact that the same name is given to their general group
of symptoms. My goal is to clearly perceive the underpinnings of
each ailment and in doing so, we often discover a thread that connects
the main complaint with mental, physical and general life patterns.
I
have found that when the evaluation concludes, many people express
that they have a greater understanding of themselves, and that they
feel they "have really been heard."
Once
Ive thoroughly reviewed and understood the case, a remedy
is prescribed and a follow-up visit is scheduled four to six weeks
later. These subsequent visits, usually about 45 minutes long, allow
me to assess the remedy and potency response. We also explore to
what extent the condition has improved, how else this improvement
has manifested, and whether adjustments are needed. Repetition of
remedy and the length of time of treatment is highly individual
as each persons response can differ.
Children and adolescents are similarly given the time and space
to express their needs and concerns. I often speak to the parents
to get a fuller understanding of the issues, but if age permits,
will spend time listening and observing children alone. My waiting
room accommodates families, so all are welcome!
Communication between visits is encouraged, whether by telephone
or email, as the care and tending of each ones progress to
health is of deep importance to me.
