Created in 1975, the Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation is a coalition of major professional associations
concerned with the quality of evaluation. The Joint Committee provides guidelines for program evaluations that are intended
both for users of evaluation and for evaluators. These Standards fall into four categories: utility (the evaluation should
serve the information needs of intended users, address pertinent questions, and be responsive to program needs), feasibility
(the evaluation should be realistic, prudent, frugal, diplomatic and responsibly allocate evaluation resources), propriety
(the evaluation should be conducted legally, ethically, and with due regard for the welfare of those involved and those affected
by the results), and accuracy (evaluators should collect valid and reliable information to reach justified conclusions with
impartial reporting).
The American Evaluation Association is an international professional association of evaluators devoted to the application
and exploration of program evaluation, personnel evaluation, technology, and many other forms of evaluation. Evaluation involves
assessing the strengths and weaknesses of programs, policies, personnel, products, and organizations to improve their effectiveness.
The American Evaluation Association's mission is to:
- Improve evaluation practices and methods
- Increase evaluation use
- Promote evaluation as a profession
- Support the contribution of evaluation to the generation of theory and knowledge about effective human action
