On April 22nd the world holds its annual celebration of Earth Day. Organizations and individuals assemble to honor nature and decry the plight of the physical earth. While there is a place for responsible use of resources, the ideology behind many of the Earth Day activities is unbiblical.

Nature and the earth are given sacred status instead of the God who created them. "Mother earth" replaces Father God. The Bible has something to say about this. "Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen." Romans 1:22-25. The earth was created for God and His glory. "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands." Psalm 19:1. "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him (Jesus Christ) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities: all things were created by him and for him." Colossians 1:15-16.

Mankind is made subservient to the rest of nature. The Bible clearly teaches the opposite. "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’ " Genesis 1:27,28. "The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." Genesis 2:15. The earth was also created to provide for the needs of mankind. "Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground--everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food.’ And it was so." Genesis 1:29,30. "The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them." Genesis 3:21. "They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer." I Tim. 4:3-5
