Bluegrass & Old Time Jams in La Grande, Oregon

Acoustic bluegrass instrumentalists and/or singers are welcome at two monthly jams The SLOW JAM is on the FIRST Monday, and the PICKIN' PARTY is on the THIRD Monday of each month from 7 until 9 p.m.

Richard and Karen Rubicam host both of these jams in their home, 207 Aquarius Way, La Grande, OR 97850. 541-963-7193.

You may park in the driveway if space is available.  Refreshments will be provided.  There is no cost or fees of any kind.  So mark the jams on your calendar and have some FUN!

The SLOW JAM is geared for beginner to low-intermediate players and/or singers who want to have the fun of playing with others.  Requirements are very simple. Instrumentalists only need:

  • To know how to tune your instrument (electronic tuners are welcome).
  • The ability to play G, C, and D chords (except fiddlers).
  • Have a capo (except fiddlers).

Singers need the ability to sing reasonably well on key and stay with the rhythm.

The SLOW JAM may have some of the same songs played at a regular jam but at a much slower tempo and will have no more than three chords.  Similar to any jam, the opportunity to "take a lead break" will pass from picker to picker around the circle.  You may choose to take a break or pass and only play back-up.  Each month the players select the songs to be played during the next jam. This provides an opportunity to learn some of the songs ahead of time.

This is NOT a performance jam - spectators are discouraged except for drivers of players who are too young to drive.  Advanced players are welcome to come for the purpose of coaching the beginners who can gain experience in a low pressure environment.

The PICKIN' PARTY is for intermediate to advanced players and/or singers.  This is where hot pickers can go all out with fast tempos, complex chord progressions, lots of rapid chord changes, finger picking all over the neck, minor keys, harmony vocals, etc.

Three daily essentials: eat, sleep, pick!
