Dance

We do a variety of dances as described below.  Seeing them is better than just reading about them, so spectators are welcome to observe any of our dances.  But actually dancing is more fun than just watching.

MODERN SQUARE DANCING

Modern Square Dancing focuses on square dances which are quick to learn, but still lots of FUN.

No experience is required. The caller will teach the steps needed before each dance.

Come either with or without a dance partner.

No commitment is needed. You are welcome to attend on any first or third Thursday during October, November & December 2009 from 7-8:30. 7-8:30. The dates of these dances are Oct 1, Oct. 15, Nov. 5, Nov. 19, Dec. 3, & Dec. 17.

Casual attire.  Men are expected to wear shirts with long sleeves.  The best shoes for dancing have smooth bottoms that provide a bit of slip & slide.  Soles with a lot of grip are not recommended, nor are shoes without heel backs.

Cost is only $2 per person.

MAINSTREAM SQUARE DANCING

Lessons have not been scheduled yet for this season.

The last ones started Thursday, January 8, 2009 - 7 to 9 p.m.

The information below is for reference.

First two lessons are FREE (only on 1/8 and 1/15).

After your two free lessons, adult fees are only $3 each lesson per person or prepaid package rate: $40 for 16 more weekly lessons.  We have a "family rate".  Youth ages 10-18 may take lessons for FREE with at least one parent whom pays for lessons.  Meets Thursdays from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Square dancing involves sets of four couples per square formation, and a caller tells you what moves to do.  In the mainstream  program you will learn 69 moves and families of moves (variations of a move).  The PLUS program adds an additional 32 moves and variations of them.

These programs recognized throughout the world as standard, and the calls are always in English.  So dancers are able to go anywhere and be assured of being able to dance the level they have learned.

Casual attire.  Men are expected to wear shirts with long sleeves.  The best shoes for dancing have smooth bottoms that provide a bit of slip & slide.  Soles with a lot of grip are not recommended, nor are shoes without heel backs.

Student dancers are welcome to watch our Saturday dances, but will not be permitted to dance on Saturdays until they have graduated from lessons.

ROUND DANCING

....uses ballroom dance steps which are choreographed to music, and a cuer prompts you.  This makes it much easier for a man to "lead" his dance partner.  Also, since all of the dancers are doing the same steps at the same time, the entire floor moves together, which is beautiful!

Similar to properly performed ballroom dancing, dancers move around the dance hall in a circle or concentric circles, hence the name, "round dancing".  The "line of dance" is normally counterclockwise but at times can also be "reverse line". Any number of couples can do round dancing.

Rhythms that are common include Two Step, Phase 1 and Phase 2 Waltzes, and Cha Cha.  At times we have learned Phase 3 and 4 Waltzes, Foxtrot, and Rumba.

At this time we do not have any classes in round dancing scheduled.
