Lizzie Drums are individually crafted from Calabash gourds. Calabash gourds are also known as giant hard shelled gourds.
The gourds used in Lizzie Drums come from a variety of sources from Southern California. After cleaning both inside and out,
the gourds are lined on the inside with a coating of Fiberglass Resin. Selected gourds are reinforced with Fiberglass cloth
when required. The resin is added both to strengthen the gourds and to improve resonance. The heads on the drums can be hairy
goat skins, naked goat skins, or fish skins. The tuning of this hand drum is the traditional Mali Djembe weave. Drums
headed with the thicker hairy skins can be played with a soft, padded, mallet in addition to bare hands. A Gourd Drum with
either a naked goat skin or a fish skin head should only be played skin-on-skin with bare hands.
